BMW Z4 Washer Pump Dead, Quick Fixes & Cost Guide

Headlight cleaning system without function

Hey all! My 2017 BMW Z4 (gas) with 113k km is having issues with the washer system. The pump's completely dead and I've got a warning light on the dash. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm a bit hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar washer system failures in their Z4? What was the actual problem and how much did repairs cost? Any suggestions for troubleshooting before heading to a shop would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2014 BMW M4 last winter. The washer pump died completely, just like yours. Initially thought it was just low fluid, but even after filling it up, nothing happened. Turned out the pump motor had corroded internally due to some water seepage. The warning light was exactly what you're describing. Before taking it to the shop, I'd suggest checking the fuse first, it's a simple fix if that's the issue. Also, listen for a humming sound when you try to spray, if you hear nothing, it's likely the pump. In my case, they had to replace the entire pump assembly. It wasn't a major repair, more of a nuisance really. The job took about an hour at the shop. Worked perfectly after that, no issues since. Just make sure whoever does the work uses OEM parts, aftermarket pumps for these cars can be hit or miss. Best of luck!

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! That's exactly what I'm dealing with, complete silence when trying to spray. I took your advice and checked the fuse, but sadly that wasn't the culprit. Would you mind sharing how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also curious if you've had any other washer system problems since getting it fixed. My Z4's been pretty reliable overall, but these little issues can be so annoying!

Hey again! Just wanted to follow up, I actually went to see my mechanic since my last post, and turns out my issue was way simpler than I initially thought! The warning light was just due to the washer fluid being too low, which was a bit embarrassing considering I thought it was a pump failure like yours. Only cost me 25€ to sort out. But about your actual pump issue, when I had my pump replaced last year, the total bill came to around 280€ including parts and labor. Haven't had a single problem with the washer system since then, everything's been working like a charm. You're absolutely right about these little issues being annoying though! Given what you're describing, the complete silence when trying to spray, it does sound exactly like what I dealt with initially. And since you've already checked the fuse, I'd say you're probably looking at a pump replacement too. Still think it's worth getting genuine BMW parts even though they cost a bit more. Let us know how it goes when you get it fixed!

Thanks for all the help! Just got back from the mechanic and wanted to update you. You were spot on about the pump, it needed a complete replacement. Found a really good shop that specializes in European cars. The mechanic showed me the old pump and it was totally corroded inside, just like you mentioned. Ended up paying a bit more than you did, around 300 for parts and labor, but they used genuine BMW parts so I'm not complaining. The whole thing took about an hour and a half. They even gave the rest of the washer system a quick check while they were at it. What a relief to have working washers again! No more awkward manual cleaning at traffic lights. Really appreciate everyone's input here, saved me from going back to my old mechanic who probably would've charged double. The car's running perfectly now. Thanks again for sharing your experience. It really helped me make the right decision!
