Need help with 2023 BMW Z4 transmission issues! Having major transmission troubles with my 2023 Z4. Both transmission and check engine lights are on, and the car is stuck in emergency mode. Transmission shifts are rough with grinding sounds. I suspect it might be related to the radiator oil pressure, but not entirely sure. Has anyone encountered similar symptoms and gotten them fixed? What did your mechanic diagnose and how was it resolved? Any insights would be really helpful, especially from those who've dealt with this specific problem.

Hey there! I've got some experience with BMWs (moderate car knowledge here). I had a similar transmission problem with my 2021 BMW M4 last year. Those symptoms sound really familiar, I got the same warning lights and rough shifting issues. In my case, it turned out to be a faulty wiring connection to the transmission control module. My mechanic found that one of the cable connectors was loose and slightly corroded. The fix wasn't too complicated, they had to replace the connector and reseat some cables. Cost me around 95 Euro and solved the problem completely. But before jumping to conclusions, could you share: How many miles are on your Z4? When did you first notice these symptoms? Have you had any recent transmission fluid changes? Any other unusual sounds or behavior? This info would help determine if your issue is similar to what I experienced with my M4. Transmission problems can be tricky, and there could be various causes for similar symptoms.

Thanks for offering to help! My Z4 has 38137 KM on it and just had its latest service three weeks ago. The issue started just yesterday when I was driving on the highway. I haven't had any transmission fluid changes beyond what was done during regular maintenance. The grinding noise is most noticeable when shifting between 2nd and 3rd gear, and it feels like the car hesitates before engaging. The weird thing is that everything was running perfectly fine until this suddenly started happening. There's also a slight vibration through the gear lever that wasn't there before. You mentioned the wiring connection issue in your M4, did you notice any warning signs before the transmission light came on? I'm hoping it's something relatively simple like in your case, but I'm a bit worried since it's showing multiple warning lights at once.

Hey again! Thanks for those details about your Z4. You know, when I had these issues with my M4, they also came on pretty suddenly, no real warning signs beforehand. One moment everything was fine, and the next, I had warning lights lighting up my dashboard like a Christmas tree! The symptoms you're describing sound eerily similar to what I experienced. That vibration through the gear lever? Had exactly the same thing. And yeah, that hesitation between 2nd and 3rd was a real pain, made me nervous every time I needed to accelerate. The fact that it started right after your service is interesting though. That's different from my situation. When my mechanic dug deeper into my M4's issue, they actually found that the connector had gotten damaged due to some heat exposure from the transmission. The placement of these connectors in our BMWs isn't exactly ideal, they're right where they can get affected by heat and vibration. Looking at your mileage and the sudden onset, I'm even more convinced it could be electrical rather than mechanical. The multiple warning lights actually make sense in this context, when the transmission control module isn't getting proper signals, it triggers several warnings as a safety measure. Have you noticed if the problem gets worse when the engine's hot? That was a telltale sign in my case. Might be worth checking before you head to the shop.

Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation, that's really helpful! Yes, actually, I've noticed the problem does seem to get worse after the engine warms up. Started paying more attention to it after you mentioned the heat issue, and there's definitely a pattern there. The grinding noise becomes more pronounced about 15-20 minutes into driving. It's such a relief to hear this might be electrical rather than a major mechanical problem. I was worried I'd need a complete transmission overhaul! I've scheduled an appointment with my mechanic for tomorrow morning and will definitely mention the wiring connector issue you experienced. Going to ask them to check the transmission control module connections first before diving into anything more complex. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, it's given me some hope that this won't be as serious (or expensive) as I initially feared. I'll update this thread once I get it diagnosed and fixed, in case anyone else runs into similar issues with their Z4.
