Grinding noise when shifting gears

Hey all! Having trouble with my 2007 BMW Z4 (149,516 KM). The transmission's acting up, getting rough shifts, grinding noises, and both engine and transmission warning lights are on. Car went into limp mode. Previous mechanic visit wasn't great, so I'm hesitant about where to take it. I suspect it might be the transmission temp sensor, but wanted to hear if anyone's had similar symptoms and what it turned out to be? Also appreciate recommendations on how to handle this with a mechanic, what questions to ask, what to watch out for? Thanks in advance!

Had a similar issue with my 2010 BMW Z3 last summer. Started with rough shifting and grinding, especially between 2nd and 3rd gear. Warning lights came on too. Took it to a garage and turned out the gearbox oil level was critically low, causing overheating and sensor issues. They found a slow leak from the transmission pan gasket. There was some metal debris in the old fluid too, which wasn't great news. They had to do a complete transmission fluid flush, replace the pan gasket, and install a new temp sensor. It was actually pretty serious, could've destroyed the transmission if I'd kept driving it. The mechanic showed me the contaminated fluid, which was really helpful to understand the problem. When you go to the shop, ask them to check the transmission fluid level and condition first. Have them show you what they find. Request a full diagnostic scan too, those warning lights store specific error codes that'll point to the exact issue. My Z3's been shifting smooth ever since the repair. Don't wait on this one, transmission issues only get worse and more expensive.

Thanks for sharing that experience! That's really helpful to hear, as the symptoms sound spot-on with what I'm dealing with. Glad you caught it before any major damage happened. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much the whole repair set you back? Also, have you had any other transmission problems since getting it fixed?

Hey there! Happy to follow up about my Z3 repair. After getting it fixed last summer, I haven't had a single transmission problem, runs like a dream now. The mechanic nailed it by replacing that faulty transmission oil temperature sensor, and sorting out the low gearbox oil level. The total bill came to 365 €, honestly, it was worth every penny considering how smooth the car's running now. Could've been way worse if I'd kept driving it with those issues! Just one tip since you asked, make sure they do a proper diagnostic scan. In my case, it really helped pinpoint exactly what was wrong, and saved time messing around with trial and error repairs. The transmission warning lights are actually pretty good at flagging the specific problems. Keep us posted on how yours turns out!

Just got back from the mechanic and wanted to update you guys. You were spot on about getting that diagnostic scan! Turns out I had almost the exact same problem, low transmission fluid from a leaky pan gasket, and a faulty temp sensor too. The repair came in a bit higher than yours at around 450, but honestly, I'm just relieved it wasn't a complete transmission failure. The mechanic was great, showed me the old fluid which looked pretty nasty, and walked me through everything they were doing. Just took it for a test drive and what a difference! No more grinding or rough shifts, and those warning lights are finally off. Car's running like new again. Really appreciate everyone's advice, helped me feel more confident about what to ask for at the shop. Sometimes these car problems turn out better than expected!
