Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know about the wiring harness being the culprit. If you don't mind me asking, how much did the repair set you back? Also curious if you've had any other steering-related issues pop up since getting it fixed?

Hey there! Glad I could help out. Just wanted to follow up, I actually got the power steering issue sorted out last week. It was exactly what I thought, a faulty cable connection in the power steering system. The mechanic fixed it up for just 95 Euro, which was a relief since I was worried it might be something more serious. The steering's working perfectly now, no more shaking or heavy steering. It feels just like new again. Haven't had any other steering problems since the repair, and honestly, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. The car handles great now, and that annoying error code is gone too. Just a heads up though, make sure your mechanic thoroughly checks all the electrical connections. Sometimes these issues can be as simple as a loose plug or damaged wire, rather than a major mechanical problem. In my case, catching it early probably saved me from bigger headaches down the road. Let me know if you need any other info about the repair. Always happy to help out a fellow BMW owner!

Thanks for the detailed follow-up! Finally got my Z4 fixed yesterday. Funny enough, my issue turned out to be different than yours. The mechanic found a leak in the power steering pump that was causing the fluid to drain slowly. Had to replace the pump and some seals. Cost me quite a bit more than yours, around 450 for parts and labor. The good news is the car feels amazing now! No more wrestling with the steering wheel like I'm in a workout session. The shaking is completely gone too. The mechanic I found was really thorough and even showed me the damaged parts. Much better experience than my last repair shop. Still keeping an eye on it, but so far, everything's working perfectly. Really appreciate everyone's help and advice on this. Made me feel a lot more confident about getting it fixed!

I had a similar issue with my 2016 BMW M4 last year. The power steering suddenly became extremely heavy, and I experienced the same symptoms, shaky steering wheel and loose handling. Turned out the power steering control module had a faulty connection. The cable harness was damaged, causing intermittent power loss to the system. It wasn't a major mechanical issue, but it definitely needed immediate attention for safety reasons. The repair involved replacing the wiring harness and recalibrating the power steering module. Just make sure whoever works on it checks both the electrical connections and the power steering fluid first. My mechanic initially thought it was just low fluid, but the diagnostic showed it was the wiring. Since it's causing handling issues, I'd recommend getting it checked soon, steering problems aren't something to wait on.
