BMW Z4 Power Seats Dead: Memory Settings & Controls Failed

Electric seats malfunction

Hey all! Having trouble with my 2018 BMW Z4 (80k km, gas engine). The power seats are completely dead, can't adjust them manually or use the memory settings. Computer's throwing an error code too. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar electric seat issues in their Z4? What was the fix and how much did it cost? Would appreciate any recommendations on what to check before heading to a shop. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2015 BMW M4 last year. The power seats completely stopped working, and I got the same error code. After visiting the garage, it turned out the main wiring harness under the seat had several damaged connections. The cables were rubbing against the seat frame, which eventually wore through the insulation. The mechanic showed me how some of the connectors were also corroded, and there was a loose ground wire connection. It wasn't just a simple fuse issue as I initially hoped. While not the most serious problem, it definitely needed proper attention since faulty wiring could lead to other electrical issues. They had to replace part of the wiring harness and clean all the connection points. They also secured the cables properly to prevent future wear. My seats have been working perfectly since then. Before heading to a shop, you could check if the seat fuse is blown, it's worth a look, though in my case it wasn't that simple. Based on my experience, I'd recommend getting it checked by a BMW specialist rather than putting it off. Hope this helps.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Glad to hear you got it sorted out. I've been wondering, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly with the seats since then, or have you noticed any other electrical quirks popping up? My Z4's starting to show similar symptoms and I'm trying to budget for the worst case scenario.

Hey again! I'm happy to report my seat issue turned out way simpler and cheaper than I expected! Only paid 95 € to fix it, just a faulty cable and plug connection that needed sorting out. Way less painful than I thought it would be. The best part? Since getting it fixed at the mechanic, everything's been running like clockwork. The electric seat adjustments are working perfectly, and I haven't noticed any other electrical gremlins popping up. Such a relief after dealing with that restricted movement for a while. Your Z4 issue sounds exactly like what I went through with my M4. While there's always a chance it could be something more complex like my original wiring harness issue, it might just be a simple connection problem like mine turned out to be. Either way, getting it checked out sooner rather than later is probably your best bet. Let me know how it goes with yours, always interested to hear if it's a similar fix!

Thanks so much for the detailed info! I actually bit the bullet and took my Z4 to a new mechanic yesterday. Turns out it was just a blown fuse and a loose connection, pretty much exactly what you described. The whole thing cost me about 100 bucks, which was such a relief after imagining all sorts of expensive scenarios! The mechanic was really upfront about everything. He showed me the issue, fixed it right there, and even gave the seat mechanisms a quick clean. The seats are working perfectly now, up, down, forward, back, everything's smooth as butter. The error code's gone too. Really glad I didn't put this off any longer. And honestly, finding this new mechanic might be the best part of the whole thing. Sometimes these annoying car problems lead to something good! Thanks again for giving me the push to get it checked out.
