Thanks for sharing your experience! My Z3 has 117591 KM on the clock, and the last transmission service was done during the latest maintenance check. I haven't noticed any oil spots under the car, which makes me think it might not be a leak in my case. The symptoms started quite suddenly, which is what made me suspect the sensor rather than a gradual fluid loss issue. Did you notice if your car also went into limp mode before you got it fixed? And was the transition from normal operation to problematic shifting as sudden as mine? Really hoping it's just the sensor and not something more serious with the transmission itself!
Hey again! Thanks for the follow-up. Yeah, my Z4 also went into limp mode, but unlike your case, mine was more gradual. I started noticing small issues with shifting maybe a week or two before the warning lights came on. Since you're not seeing any oil spots and the symptoms came on suddenly, you might be right about the sensor. In fact, after I got my oil leak fixed, I had another issue six months later that turned out to be exactly that, a faulty transmission oil pressure sensor! The symptoms were almost identical to what you're describing: sudden warning lights, limp mode, and rough shifting. That repair was much cheaper, around 150 Euro for the sensor and labor. Given your recent maintenance and the sudden onset, I'd bet money on the sensor being the culprit. It's actually a pretty common issue with these models. My mechanic told me these sensors tend to fail around the 100-120K kilometer mark, which is right where your car is. Quick tip though, even if you're confident it's the sensor, I'd still get it checked soon. Running the transmission in limp mode for too long isn't great for it, even if the actual transmission is fine. Keep us posted on what you find out!
Thanks so much for the detailed response! That's really reassuring to hear that you had a similar experience with the sensor. The fact that it happened around the same mileage definitely makes me feel better about my diagnosis. I've already called my mechanic and scheduled an appointment for tomorrow morning. Will definitely keep the car parked until then to avoid any potential damage from driving it in limp mode. You've really helped put my mind at ease, especially since I was worried it might be a complete transmission failure which would have been way more expensive to fix. If it turns out to be just the sensor like in your case, that would be such a relief! I'll update the thread once I get the diagnosis. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it's been super helpful!
Hey there! As someone with some experience working on cars, I can relate. I had a similar issue with my 1998 BMW Z4 last year. Those grinding sounds and warning lights are definitely concerning! When it happened to me, I immediately took it to my trusted workshop. Turned out the gearbox oil level was dangerously low, causing all those symptoms you're describing. The transmission was basically crying for help! They did a thorough check, topped up the fluid, and also found a small leak that was causing the oil loss. The whole thing cost me 365 Euro, but it was worth every penny as it prevented more serious damage to the transmission. The car's been shifting smoothly ever since. What's your current mileage and when was the last time you had the transmission serviced? Also, have you noticed any oil spots where you park? This info would help determine if you're dealing with the same issue. Stay safe and let us know what you find out!
