Engine hard to start

Hey fellow BMW owners, having trouble with my 2002 Z3 (16,131 km, gasoline engine) and need some advice. Car's being really stubborn to start, and when it does, the lights are weak and flickering. Mechanic pulled the codes and found some errors, but my last experience with repairs wasn't great. Anyone dealt with similar starting/electrical issues on their Z3? What was the fix, and did you find a trustworthy mechanic for it? Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had similar issues with my 2005 BMW Z4 last winter. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I experienced, weak starts and flickering lights. Initially thought it was just the battery, but turned out the alternator was failing, which then caused the battery to get damaged too. The tricky part was that the failing alternator wasn't sending proper voltage to the electrical system, which triggered multiple error codes. My mechanic explained that the alternator failure caused a chain reaction, damaging both the voltage regulator and the battery. It was pretty serious since it could've left me stranded anywhere. Had to replace both the alternator and battery to completely fix it. After the repair, all the electrical issues disappeared, and the car's been running perfectly since then. Make sure whoever checks it looks at the entire charging system, not just the battery. These symptoms rarely come alone in these models. Hope this helps with your troubleshooting!

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful as it sounds exactly like what I'm going through. I'm glad you got it sorted out. Do you remember roughly how much you paid for the whole repair job? Also, has everything been running smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other electrical quirks popping up? Just want to make sure I'm prepared for what might be coming my way with my Z3.

Hey again! Just wanted to update you on my Z4 situation. After getting it fixed, everything's been running like a dream, seriously, not a single electrical problem since! The best part? The repair didn't cost me anything because they found out it was actually a consequential fault from a previous repair that wasn't done properly. The shop took responsibility and sorted it right out. The starting problem completely disappeared after they fixed it. I know I got lucky with the cost situation, that's definitely not typical for alternator and battery repairs on these cars. But what a relief to have a car that starts perfectly every single time now! The lights are bright and steady, no more of that annoying flickering. Tell you what, it's like having a completely different car now. If your issue is similar to what mine was, you're definitely on the right track getting it checked out.

Just got back from the mechanic, and wow, what a journey! Took your advice and had them check the whole charging system. Turned out you were spot on, my alternator was toast, and it had fried my battery too. Found a really decent mechanic who walked me through everything. The repair set me back quite a bit, but honestly, it was worth every penny. No more flickering lights or struggling to start! The mechanic even showed me the old alternator, it was in pretty rough shape. Can't believe I was driving around like that for so long. The best part? The car's running better than it has in months. Starts up instantly, lights are bright and steady, it's like having a new Z3! Really grateful for your help in pointing me in the right direction. Nothing beats getting advice from someone who's been through the same thing. Time to enjoy some proper driving again!
