Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful. Had almost the exact same symptoms with my XM. You're absolutely right about not trying DIY fixes, learned that lesson the hard way when I tried resetting the system myself! Do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the key reprogramming? Also, has everything been working smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other quirks with the security system?
Hey there! Yeah, happy to help with those details. The repair job ended up costing me just 45 € for the key reprogramming, which honestly wasn't as bad as I expected. And I've got great news, since getting it fixed at the mechanic, the immobilizer system has been working perfectly! No more flashing warnings or starting issues at all. I can totally relate to your DIY attempt, these systems are really tempting to try and fix yourself, but I'm glad I went straight to a professional this time. The car starts up perfectly every single time now, and I haven't noticed any weird quirks with the security system since the repair. It's like the problem never existed. Just goes to show that sometimes the simplest solution (reprogramming) is all it takes, even when the problem seems major. Really glad I didn't waste time trying different fixes myself, these BMW security systems are pretty complex and need the proper diagnostic tools to sort out.
Thanks for the follow-up info! You'll be happy to know I got my car sorted out yesterday. Felt a bit nervous going to a new mechanic, but they totally knew their stuff. Got there first thing in the morning, and it turned out to be exactly what you said, a key programming issue. They hooked it up to their diagnostic computer and found that my key's chip had partially failed. The whole job took about an hour and a half. Cost me a bit more than yours at 75 € since they had to replace some components in the key, but honestly, it's worth every penny to have the car running properly again. Funny thing is, the mechanic mentioned they see this issue quite often with newer BMWs. Would've saved myself so much stress if I'd just gone straight to them instead of messing around with YouTube tutorials! Car's running like a dream now, starts up perfectly every time. Really appreciate your help in pointing me in the right direction!
Had the same trouble with my 2020 BMW X6 M50i last month. The immobilizer warning was flashing, and the car wouldn't stay running for more than a few seconds. Took it to the dealer since it turned out to be a key programming issue. The car's security system wasn't recognizing the key properly. They had to reprogram both keys and reset the immobilizer system. It wasn't a mechanical problem, just electronic programming. This is actually a serious issue because you can't use the car at all, but the fix itself isn't complicated for someone with the right diagnostic equipment. The whole thing took about two hours at the service center. Make sure whoever works on it has experience with BMW security systems. My regular mechanic couldn't handle it because he didn't have the specific BMW programming software. A warning though, don't try any DIY fixes for immobilizer issues. You might end up making things worse.
