BMW XM Seat Belt Handover System Failure, Solutions?

Seatbelt carrier problem

Hey everyone! Having trouble with my 2023 BMW XM. The seat belt-handover system stopped working and there's a fault code for it. I suspect it might be the belt tensioner, but not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with this issue before? Curious to know what the actual problem was and how your dealer/workshop resolved it. Would really appreciate hearing about your repair experience and costs involved. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! Got some experience with that issue. I had a similar problem with my 2021 BMW X6 M (also owned a M5 before). Got decent car knowledge from working on my own rides, but I'm no expert. The belt handover system in mine completely failed last summer. Super annoying! My trusted workshop diagnosed it as a defective belt bringer unit, pretty much exactly what you're describing. Had to replace the whole mechanism, set me back about 455 Euro. After the fix, it's been working perfectly. Mind sharing more details about when this started happening and if you're getting any specific warning messages? Could help narrow down if it's the same issue I had.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My XM's issue started about a week ago, totally out of the blue. Current mileage is 123815 KM and had the latest service just last month. No warning lights on the dash, it just stopped doing the handover motion completely. Good to know about the belt bringer unit, that gives me a clearer direction. Was your repair covered under warranty or did you have to pay out of pocket? Mine's still under warranty, so hoping it won't hit my wallet too hard!

Hey again! Thanks for those extra details about your XM. Mine was actually pretty similar, just stopped working suddenly without any warning lights. I was at around 115000 KM when it happened. Since mine was just out of warranty (typical timing, right?), I had to pay out of pocket for the repair. But you're in luck! Since your XM is a 2023 and still under warranty, this should definitely be covered. BMW's warranty typically includes these kinds of mechanical failures. Just a heads up though, my workshop did mention these belt handover systems can be a bit finicky. When they replaced mine, they also checked the wiring harness because apparently that can sometimes cause similar symptoms. In my case, it was definitely the belt bringer unit, but might be worth having them check the whole system while they're at it. Let me know how it goes with the warranty repair. Always interesting to hear if they find something different than what I experienced. These newer models might have slightly different components than my X6 M.

Thanks a ton for all that info! Really helpful to know about the wiring harness too, I'll definitely mention that when I take it in. Just booked an appointment for next week at my dealer. You're right about being lucky with the warranty timing! I'll make sure they do a thorough check of the whole system while they're at it. It's actually a relief to hear someone else had the same issue and got it sorted without any major drama. I'll update the thread once I get it fixed, might help others who run into the same problem. Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience, really appreciate it!
