BMW XM Owners Report Serious Power and Stalling Issues

Check engine light on

Stalling while idling

Loss of engine power

Hey all, having some concerning issues with my 2022 BMW XM. Engine's acting up with power loss, stalling at idle, and speed fluctuations. Check engine light is on and throttle response is really sluggish. I suspect it might be the fuel pressure regulator, but want to hear from others who've dealt with similar problems. Anyone got their XM fixed for these symptoms? What was the actual issue and repair solution? Looking for real experiences here.

I have some experience with BMWs. Had a similar issue with my 2020 BMW X6 M last year. Those symptoms sound exactly like what I dealt with! After changing the fuel filter, my car started acting up, power loss, rough idle, the works. The check engine light was driving me crazy. Took it to my workshop, and turns out there was an error in the ECU calibration after the filter change. They had to reset and recalibrate the fuel system parameters. Simple fix, cost me 45 Euro, and the car's been running perfectly since. Before jumping to conclusions about the fuel pressure regulator, could you share: Have you recently had any fuel system work done? What error codes is it showing? Does it happen more when the engine is cold or warm? Just trying to help narrow it down since it might save you some cash if it's just a calibration issue like mine was.

Thanks for sharing that experience! I've got 73749 KM on the clock, and these issues started right after my latest service, which makes your ECU calibration theory really interesting. The symptoms are definitely worse when the engine is cold, and it takes a good 10 minutes of running before it smooths out a bit. Haven't pulled the error codes yet, planning to do that tomorrow. No recent fuel system work other than the routine maintenance, but they did change the fuel filter during the service. Your situation sounds spot-on similar to what I'm experiencing. I'll definitely get those ECU parameters checked before replacing any parts. Really hoping it's just a calibration issue like yours was! Appreciate the tip, as I was about to drop some serious cash on a new regulator.

Hey there! Yeah, same BMW X6 M owner here again who had the ECU calibration issue. That's really telling that your problems started right after the service. it's like déjà vu, literally the exact same thing that happened to me! The cold start symptoms you're describing totally match up with what I experienced too. It was super frustrating having the car run rough for those first 10 minutes. Quick tip from my experience, when you get those error codes, make sure to mention to your mechanic that this all started after the service and fuel filter change. My mechanic initially wanted to replace several expensive parts until I pushed about the timing of when the issues started. Don't let them jump straight to replacing the regulator or other pricey parts. The calibration reset is way cheaper and, given your symptoms and their timing, I'd bet good money that's your issue too. Mine's been running like a dream for over a year now after that simple fix. Keep me posted about those error codes when you get them. Really curious to see if they match what mine were showing. We can probably save you some serious cash here!

Thanks for doubling down on that advice! Just got back from pulling the codes, got P0171 and P0172, which my research says are related to fuel mixture issues. This definitely strengthens your ECU calibration theory. Called my mechanic and specifically mentioned how the problems started after the service and fuel filter change. He actually agreed it could be calibration-related and managed to squeeze me in for tomorrow morning. You've probably saved me a ton of money and headache here! Will definitely update you after the appointment. Really glad I asked here before jumping straight to replacing parts. Amazing how such a simple fix could solve what seems like a major issue. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it's been super helpful!
