BMW XM Owner Reports Multiple Engine Performance Issues

Loud hissing on acceleration

Poor fuel economy

Hey everyone! My 2023 BMW XM is acting up lately. Getting terrible throttle response, jerking under acceleration, and burning way more fuel than usual. Engine's idling rough with unusual RPM jumps, and I'm getting a CEL. Had it emissions tested and it failed. What's really concerning is the stalling and loud hissing noise during acceleration. I suspect it might be an air intake leak, but I'd like to hear from anyone who's dealt with similar symptoms. Did you get it fixed? What did the mechanic find? Any specific areas I should ask them to check? Thanks for your help!

Hey there! I had a very similar issue with my 2021 BMW X6 last year. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I experienced, especially that hissing noise and rough idle. My M4 didn't have these problems though. It turned out to be a cracked intake hose. The mechanic spotted it during inspection, the rubber had deteriorated and was letting air escape. Got it replaced at my local workshop, cost me around 100 Euro total. The difference was night and day, smooth acceleration returned and no more excessive fuel consumption. Before I share more specific details about my repair, could you share: Have you noticed any specific conditions when the symptoms get worse? (like cold starts or hot weather), Are you getting any specific error codes with that CEL? When was your last routine maintenance?

Thanks for sharing your experience! My symptoms definitely match what you described. Currently at 154759 KM and getting worse especially during warm-up. Haven't done a diagnostic scan yet, but planning to get it checked this week since my last service was just two months ago. The hissing gets really noticeable when I push the throttle, and you might be onto something with the intake hose, makes perfect sense given all the symptoms. Good to hear it was a relatively simple fix for your X6. Did you notice any black residue around the hose area before getting it fixed? I'll definitely have my mechanic take a closer look at the intake system.

Hey again! Yeah, you definitely triggered some memories there about my X6's issues. And yes, actually, I did notice some black residue around the hose connections! That was one of the telltale signs that helped my mechanic pinpoint the problem quickly. Since you mentioned the hissing gets worse when pushing the throttle, that's exactly what mine did too. It's like the engine was trying to gulp air through a straw with holes in it. With 154K on the clock, those rubber hoses can definitely start showing their age. Quick tip from my experience, when your mechanic checks it out, ask them to inspect all the connecting points too, not just the main intake hose. After my repair, I learned that these issues sometimes start at the clamps or connection points before affecting the actual hose. Better to catch any potential weak spots while they're in there. The best part was how quickly everything went back to normal after the fix. No more jerking, fuel consumption dropped back to normal, and that annoying hissing completely disappeared. If your symptoms are as similar as they sound, you might be looking at the same straightforward fix I had. Let me know what your mechanic finds, curious to see if it's the same issue!

Thanks so much for those additional details! That's super helpful, especially about checking the clamps and connection points, I wouldn't have thought to specifically request that. Really encouraging to hear how completely it fixed your issues. You've actually made me feel a lot better about the whole situation. I was worried it might be something major, but this sounds much more manageable. I've already called my mechanic and scheduled it for tomorrow morning. I'll definitely have them do a thorough check of the entire intake system, especially those connection points you mentioned. Will definitely update you once I get it sorted. Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience, it's given me a much clearer idea of what to expect!
