BMW XM Mirror Heat & Dimming Issues: Solutions Needed

Mirror doesn't defrost

Hey there! Having trouble with my 2023 BMW XM's mirrors lately. Both heating and dimming functions stopped working completely, and there's an error code showing up. Pretty sure the mirror heating system is the culprit. Has anyone dealt with this before? What did your mechanic find and how did they fix it? Looking for some real-world experiences before taking it to the shop.

Hey! Got some experience with cars, and I had a similar issue with my 2021 BMW X6. The mirrors were acting up just like yours, both heating and dimming stopped working. Had this fixed at my regular workshop last month. Turned out it was just a faulty cable connection to the mirror control unit. The mechanic found some corrosion on the connectors. Total bill was 95 Euro for diagnostics and fixing the connection. What's your mileage and have you noticed any other electrical issues? Also, does this happen all the time or intermittently? Might help narrow down if it's the same problem I had. Btw, before taking it to the workshop, I'd suggest checking your warranty since your XM is pretty new. Could save you some money!

Just had my last service at 189293 KM. I've noticed it's pretty consistent, the mirrors just won't respond at all, no matter what I try. Haven't spotted any other electrical gremlins, everything else seems to be working fine. Thanks for sharing your experience! Good shout about the warranty, totally forgot about that since I've been doing most maintenance myself. I'll give my dealer a call tomorrow to check if this would be covered. A faulty cable connection sounds way better than having to replace the whole mirror assembly!

Hey again! Yeah, definitely sounds similar to what I experienced with my X6. Since you mentioned it's consistent and there are no other electrical issues, I'm even more convinced it's probably the same cable connection problem I had. When my mechanic opened it up, the connectors looked fine from the outside, but they found corrosion once they actually got in there. Just to add to my previous comment, since you're at 189k KM, might be worth having them check the wiring harness in general. My mechanic mentioned these issues can sometimes pop up at higher mileages due to general wear and tear. When they fixed mine, they also applied some dielectric grease to prevent future corrosion. Good call on doing your own maintenance, by the way! I do most of mine too, but these electrical gremlins can be tricky to diagnose without the proper diagnostic tools. Let us know what the dealer says about the warranty. Even if it's not covered, at least now you know it might not be as expensive as initially feared. Keep us posted on what they find!

I'll jump in with my final response to wrap this up: Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! You've really put my mind at ease about this whole mirror situation. The tip about the dielectric grease is super helpful, I'll definitely ask them about that when I take it in. Just got off the phone with the dealer actually, and good news, they said it should be covered under the extended warranty I got with the car! Got an appointment scheduled for next week. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences, especially about the wiring harness check. You're right about these electrical issues being tricky to diagnose at home, even with all my DIY experience, some things are just better left to the pros with the right diagnostic equipment. I'll definitely post an update once I get it sorted. Thanks again for all the help!
