BMW XM Hesitation and Jerking: Misfire Mystery Solved?

Shaking while idling

Jerking on acceleration

Check engine light on

Hey everyone! Having trouble with my 2023 BMW XM. When I press the gas, the car hesitates and jerks, plus the engine's running rough. Check engine light is on too. My mechanic mentioned possible combustion misfires, but I'd like to hear from others who've dealt with similar issues. What was the actual problem and how did your shop fix it? Any repair costs would be helpful too.

Hey there! I've got some experience working on BMWs (some experience with maintenance and repairs). Had a similar issue with my 2021 BMW X6 last year. The symptoms were exactly like yours, jerking, hesitation, and rough idling. Turned out it was a faulty fuel injector. My trusted workshop diagnosed it after running some tests, and they had to replace one of the injectors. The whole thing, including parts and labor, cost me around 515 Euro. Was quite relieved it wasn't something worse! Before I share more specifics, could you share: How many miles/kilometers on your XM? Are you getting any specific error codes? Does it happen more when the engine is cold or warm? Have you noticed any decrease in fuel efficiency? Also had this happen on my 's M340i, so it's not uncommon in BMWs. Let me know the details, and I might be able to help more!

Thanks for your response! I've got 19677 KM on the clock since my last service. In my case, it happens more when the engine is warm, and yes, I've definitely noticed my fuel consumption going up lately. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get the specific error codes yet, but I'm planning to get them read tomorrow. Really hoping it's just a fuel injector like in your case and not something more serious. Did you notice any particular warning signs before your injector completely failed?

Hey again! Yes, actually, before my injector completely failed, I noticed a few warning signs that sound very similar to what you're experiencing. The increased fuel consumption was definitely one of the first signs I picked up on. My X6 started drinking fuel like crazy about two weeks before things got really bad. Looking at your mileage and symptoms, especially the fact that it's worse when warm, it's really similar to what I experienced. Before my injector completely gave up, I noticed the car would run particularly rough after driving for about 15-20 minutes. The jerking would get more pronounced during that time too. One thing I forgot to mention in my previous reply, I also noticed a slight burning smell sometimes, especially after longer drives. Did you notice anything like that? If not, that might actually be good news, as it could mean you caught the problem earlier than I did. Just a heads up, when you get those error codes read, look out for P0201 to P0206 codes. These are typically related to fuel injector circuits and that's what showed up on mine. If you see any of these, it's pretty much confirming our suspicions about the injector. Keep me posted about those codes when you get them! If it is indeed an injector issue, at least you know it's a fairly straightforward fix.

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! You know what, I actually have noticed a slight burning smell lately, but I thought I was just being paranoid! It's really helpful to hear about your experience, makes me feel better knowing it might just be an injector issue rather than something major. I'll definitely keep an eye out for those P0201-P0206 codes tomorrow when I get it checked. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, especially about the progression of symptoms. I'm lucky I'm catching this early, seeing how things got worse with your X6 over time is a good wake-up call. I'll make sure to get this sorted ASAP. Will let you know what the diagnostic reveals, but I'm feeling much more confident now about what to expect. Thanks again for all the help!
