BMW XM Brake Warning: Spongy Pedal Causes Concern

Spongy/unresponsive brakes

Hey all! Need some advice about my 2023 BMW XM (90k km). The brake warning light just popped up along with an alert on the screen. The brake pedal feels different than usual, kind of spongy and weird. I'm thinking it might be low brake fluid, but after a bad experience at my last mechanic visit, I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their XM? What was the actual issue and where did you get it fixed? Really appreciate any input from those who've been there. Thanks!

Hey there! I had almost identical symptoms with my 2020 BMW X6 M last month, spongy brake pedal and warning lights. Took it to the garage and turned out to be more than just low fluid. The brake pads were severely worn, and there was a small leak in one of the brake lines. The mechanic showed me how the brake pad material was down to about 2mm, while the minimum safe threshold is 3mm. This isn't something to postpone, I learned it could lead to rotor damage or worse, brake failure. They had to replace the pads, fix the leaking line, and bleed the brake system. The work took about 4-5 hours total. From my experience, when the brake pedal feels spongy and you get warning lights, it's usually a serious safety issue that needs immediate attention. Would recommend getting it checked asap at a certified shop, these symptoms aren't something to gamble with. Hope this helps!

Hey again! Thanks for sharing your experience, it's really helpful to hear from someone who went through something similar. Sounds like you got it sorted out pretty well with those brake repairs. I've been meaning to ask, do you remember roughly how much the whole job set you back? Always good to have an idea of what to expect cost-wise. Also, just curious, has everything been running smoothly since the repair? No more brake issues or warning lights popping up? Let me know, planning to take mine in soon and your input would really help! Cheers

Hey there! Happy to help with those details! Yeah, the whole brake job cost me 480 €, which honestly wasn't as bad as I was expecting given the work they had to do. The mechanic sorted out that low brake fluid issue and fixed the worn brakes. Everything's been running like a dream since then, no more sponginess in the pedal, and those annoying warning lights haven't flashed up again. Actually feels way better than before, the brakes are nice and responsive now, and I feel much safer driving. Definitely worth every penny spent. It's been about three months since the repair, and I haven't had a single problem. The mechanic did a really thorough job, checked everything while they were at it. Trust me, you'll notice a huge difference once you get yours fixed. The peace of mind alone is worth it. If you need any other details about the repair, just let me know! Take care!

Hey, thanks so much for all that info! Just wanted to update you, I took your advice and got my car checked out yesterday. You were spot on about getting it dealt with quickly! Turned out I had a similar issue with worn brake pads, but luckily no leaking lines. The mechanic I found was actually great, really took the time to explain everything and show me what needed fixing. Cost came to about 400 € for new pads and a brake fluid flush. Already feeling a massive difference in how the car handles, no more spongy pedal, and those warning lights are finally gone! The brakes feel super responsive now, way better than before. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, helped me bite the bullet and get it sorted instead of putting it off. Feels good to have a safely running car again! Thanks again for all your help!
