Thanks for sharing your experience! My XM has the gasoline engine and just hit 65438 KM on the clock. I had my last service about 2 months ago and everything was perfect until this warning popped up. No other warning lights showing up besides the airbag one. Definitely makes me nervous since it's a safety system. The car drives perfectly fine otherwise, but I'm worried about the sensor being triggered unnecessarily. Did your mechanic mention if this is a common issue? I'm hoping it's just a sensor that needs recalibration rather than having to replace the whole mechanism.
Hey again! Always good to follow up on these kinds of issues. Yeah, having dealt with this on my X6, I totally get why you're nervous. Actually, my mechanic did mention it's becoming a more common issue on newer BMWs, especially after they hit around 60,000 KM. The acceleration sensors can get a bit finicky with age, even though that's not really "old" for a BMW. In my case, I initially hoped for just a recalibration too, but it turned out the sensor itself was faulty. The good news is that it's not usually related to the actual hood mechanism, those spring actuators are typically fine even when triggered. My mechanic explained that the system is designed to err on the safe side, so it'll trigger warnings at the slightest hint of a problem. Since you're only 2 months post-service and the car's running fine otherwise, I'd bet you're looking at a similar sensor issue to what I had. The repair itself isn't too complex, took them about 3 hours to sort mine out. Just make sure whoever works on it knows their way around BMW safety systems. Let me know how it goes when you get it checked out. Always curious to hear if these fixes work out the same for others!
Thanks so much for all the detailed info! It's really reassuring to hear that this isn't some super rare issue and that there's likely a straightforward fix. I'll definitely get it checked out this week, better safe than sorry with safety systems like this. You've actually made me feel a lot better about the whole situation. I was worried I'd need to replace the entire hood mechanism, which would've been a much bigger expense. Sounds like I should prepare for a sensor replacement, which isn't nearly as bad as I was imagining. I'll book it in with my regular BMW specialist tomorrow. They've worked on my cars before, so they should be familiar with these systems. I'll keep you posted on what they find, would be interesting to see if it's the same sensor issue you had with your X6. Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience. It's exactly the kind of firsthand information I was hoping to get!
Hey there! I've got some experience working on BMWs as an amateur enthusiast. I had a similar issue with my 2020 BMW X6 last year. The active hood sensor was giving me the same warnings, airbag light and all. Pretty nerve-wracking since it's a safety feature. Took it to my regular workshop and they diagnosed it as a faulty acceleration sensor that triggers the hood mechanism. The repair set me back about 315 Euro, but it fixed the problem completely. Before you proceed though, which engine variant is your XM running? Would help to know if you're seeing any other warning lights or experiencing any other symptoms. These systems can be a bit tricky, and the fix might vary depending on your specific setup. Stay in touch! Happy to share more details based on your feedback.
