BMW X7 Washer Nozzles Malfunction: Temperature Issues

Spray nozzles frozen

|

Fault stored

Hey everyone! Having trouble with my 2022 BMW X7. The windshield washer system is acting up, nozzles are freezing in cold weather but also getting scorched. There's an error code showing up too. I suspect it might be the washer heater system, but I'd like to hear from others who've dealt with this issue. Has anyone experienced something similar? What was the fix and how did your workshop handle it? Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had almost the same problem with my 2020 BMW X5 last winter (I also own an X3). I've got some experience working on cars, but mostly basic maintenance stuff. The symptoms were identical to what you're describing. Took it to my regular workshop and they found it was actually a faulty connection in the washer heater wiring harness. The cable had worn out and was causing intermittent issues. Total repair was 95 Euro, mainly labor costs for tracking down the issue and replacing the connection. Could you share more details about when exactly this started happening and if you notice any patterns with the error code? Also, which error code are you getting? This could help confirm if it's the same issue I had. The fix was pretty straightforward once they found the actual problem, and it's been working perfectly since then.

Hey! Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm at 197639 KM and just dealing with this washer system headache. The error started showing up about two weeks ago, it's the "Check washer fluid system" warning. Initially thought it was just the fluid level, but nope, filled it up and still getting issues. Your wiring harness situation sounds pretty similar to what I'm experiencing. The nozzles work sometimes, and other times they just don't respond at all. Good to know it was a straightforward fix for you, gives me hope it won't be a massive repair bill. Think I'll have the workshop check the wiring first before replacing any major components.

Hey again! Yep, that error message and the symptoms you're describing are exactly what I dealt with on my X5. When you mentioned the mileage, it actually makes perfect sense, my issue popped up around the 190,000 km mark too. These wiring problems seem to be a bit of a weak point in these models. The intermittent response from the nozzles was super annoying, right? It would work fine one day, then nothing the next. Mine would sometimes make this weird buzzing sound when I tried to spray, which was another clue pointing to the electrical connection. Quick tip from my experience, if you're dealing with this before getting it to the workshop, try not to keep pressing the washer button repeatedly when it's not working. I did that out of frustration and it might have caused some extra strain on the pump. One thing I didn't mention in my first reply, after they fixed the wiring, they recommended using winter-grade washer fluid year-round. Been doing that since and haven't had any issues with freezing or scorching. Might be worth considering once you get the wiring sorted. Let me know how it goes at the workshop. Curious to see if it's the same fix for your X7 as it was for my X5!

Thanks so much for all the detailed advice! That's really helpful about not repeatedly pressing the washer button, I've definitely been guilty of doing that out of frustration. I'll stop that right away. And thanks for the winter-grade fluid tip too, that makes a lot of sense. It's actually quite reassuring to hear that yours started acting up around the same mileage. Makes me feel like it's just a normal wear and tear thing rather than something more serious. I've booked it in at the workshop for next week, and I'll make sure to mention the wiring harness issue you experienced. I'll definitely update you once I get it sorted. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, it's exactly the kind of firsthand info I was hoping to get. At least now I won't go in completely blind when talking to the mechanics!
