BMW X7 Stalling and Starting Issues, Ignition Problems?
Shaking while idling
Car won't start
Engine shuts off by itself

Thanks for sharing your experience! I'm having the exact same symptoms with my X7, currently at 136304 KM. My last service was actually just two months ago, and everything was fine then. No clicking sounds when starting, but I do get an occasional check engine light that comes and goes. You might be onto something with the fuse box suggestion, that sounds way less expensive than replacing the ignition switch. I'll definitely have my mechanic check the fuses first. It's such a relief to hear it might be something simple rather than a major repair. Were you able to drive it to the workshop when you had the issue, or did you need to get it towed?
Hey again! Glad my fuse box tip got your attention. Yeah, with my X5, I actually managed to drive it to the workshop, but it was pretty nerve-wracking. The engine kept threatening to die at every stoplight, but I made it somehow! That check engine light you mentioned, that's actually different from what I experienced. Mine never showed any warning lights, which is why the fuse diagnosis was a bit of a surprise. Since you're getting that intermittent check engine light, you might want to get the codes read first. Could be something else entirely. I'd still recommend checking those fuses though, it's definitely the cheapest thing to rule out first. Just wanted to mention that after my fuse was replaced, I also ended up cleaning the fuel injectors as a preventive measure. My mechanic suggested it since the faulty fuse might have caused some irregular fuel delivery. If you want my honest opinion now, given that check engine light, you might be dealing with something different than what I had. Could be worth checking your fuel pressure regulator too, these X series can be sensitive about fuel delivery. Keep us posted on what you find out!
Thanks so much for all the detailed advice! You're right, the check engine light in my case does make it a bit different from your situation. I've decided to have it towed to my mechanic tomorrow morning just to be safe. No point risking it stalling in the middle of traffic! I'll definitely have them start with checking the fuses and get those diagnostic codes read. Really appreciate the tip about the fuel injectors and pressure regulator too, I'll mention those to my mechanic as well. It's honestly such a relief to talk to someone who's dealt with BMW issues before. Will update the thread once I find out what's actually causing all these problems. Here's hoping it's something relatively simple and not too expensive to fix!
I have some experience with BMWs, as I own a 2021 BMW X5 (and previously had an X3). Had almost identical issues last year, the unusual stalling and rough running was really frustrating! Took it to my trusted workshop and turns out it was just a blown fuse in the main fuse box. Pretty simple fix actually, cost me 52 Euro including labor. The mechanic showed me the burnt fuse and explained it was affecting the fuel pump circuit. Before you jump to ignition switch conclusions, could you share: Any warning lights on the dash? Does it make any clicking sounds when trying to start? Have you checked your battery health? These details would help narrow down if you're facing the same issue I had. BMWs can be tricky with electrical gremlins!
