BMW X7 Showing Multiple Error Messages, Help Needed

Error message in the infotainment system

Error message in the speedometer

Hi all! My 2020 BMW X7 petrol is showing multiple error messages simultaneously, one in the error memory log, another in the infotainment display, and a third in the instrument cluster. I suspect it's related to a fault code, but I'm not sure which one exactly. Has anyone encountered something similar? Would appreciate hearing about your experiences, particularly how your workshop diagnosed and resolved the issue. Thanks in advance.

Hey there! I have some experience with BMWs, and I had a similar issue with my 2018 BMW X5 (also had an X3 before). The multiple error messages drove me nuts! I feel your pain. Had to take it to my trusted workshop as the errors kept popping up everywhere, dash, screen, you name it. Turned out it was a coding issue after a software update. The workshop had to reconfigure and recode the vehicle's software systems. Cost me about 360 Euro but fixed all the error messages. Before I can share more specific details, could you share: Have you had any recent software updates? Which specific error messages are you seeing? Did this start happening suddenly or gradually? This might help narrow down if you're dealing with the same issue I had.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Just had my latest service last month and everything was fine until these errors started showing up. For reference, I'm at 77488 KM, and it's been well-maintained since I got it. No recent software updates that I'm aware of. The errors just popped up suddenly while driving yesterday. All messages appeared within minutes of each other. The main one keeps blinking something about "drivetrain malfunction," but there's also warnings about the stability control and engine management system. I'm thinking about taking it to the workshop tomorrow, but wanted to check if anyone here had similar experiences first. Did your errors also include anything about the drivetrain?

Hey again! Yes, actually, now that you mention the drivetrain malfunction, that rings a bell! I had that exact same warning pop up along with the stability control message on my X5. What you're describing sounds eerily similar to what I went through. In my case, the drivetrain error was indeed part of the whole mess of warnings. Initially, I was worried it might be something major with the transmission, but it turned out the car's computer was basically having a bit of a meltdown. When multiple systems throw errors like this simultaneously, it's often more of a communication/software issue rather than actual mechanical problems. Since you're getting the same combination of errors I had, I'd definitely recommend getting it checked out ASAP. These symptoms are really similar to what I experienced, and while it ended up being "just" a software issue in my case, it's always better to be safe than sorry with these high-tech cars. Quick tip though, make sure to let the workshop know about all the error messages you're seeing. When I first went in, I only mentioned the drivetrain warning, and it took them longer to diagnose the real issue because they didn't have the full picture. Let us know what they find, I'm really curious if it's the same issue I had!

Thanks so much for the detailed feedback! You've actually made me feel a bit better about the situation. I was worried it might be something catastrophic, but hearing that you had such a similar experience with your X5 gives me hope it might just be a software problem. I've gone ahead and booked it in for tomorrow morning at 8 AM. I'll definitely make sure to tell them about all the error messages, that's a really good tip about giving them the full picture. I've even taken some photos of the different warnings to show them. It's pretty amazing how these modern cars can have what seems like a major problem that turns out to be just a software glitch. I'll update this thread once I get it sorted out, might help someone else who runs into the same issue down the line. Thanks again for sharing your experience. The timing couldn't have been better, and it's helped calm my nerves about the whole situation!
