BMW X7 Rough Idle & Stalling: Real Owner Experience

Check engine light on

Shaking while idling

Hi everyone! My 2020 BMW X7 (gas engine, 20979 KM) has been giving me trouble lately. The check engine light is on, and the engine runs really rough, it stalls when idling and jerks during acceleration. I suspect it might be the fuel pressure sensor, but I had a bad experience with my last mechanic and want to be better informed this time. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their X7? What was the actual problem and how much did the repair cost? Would really appreciate hearing about your experiences with mechanics who fixed this successfully. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I can relate to this issue. I had a similar experience with my 2017 BMW X5 40i last year. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I dealt with, rough idle, jerking, and that dreaded check engine light. In my case, it turned out to be a corroded wiring harness connector at the fuel pressure sensor. The moisture had gotten in and messed up the connection, causing erratic readings. The garage had to replace the entire wiring harness assembly and the sensor itself. It wasn't a catastrophic problem, but it needed immediate attention since bad sensor readings can mess with the fuel mixture and potentially damage other components if left unchecked. The repair took about half a day at the dealership. Just a heads up, while you might be right about the fuel pressure sensor, these symptoms can also point to ignition coil issues or faulty injectors. Make sure they do proper diagnostics before replacing parts.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! I went through something similar with my X7 last year. I suspected the fuel pressure sensor too, and those symptoms you described match exactly what I had. A certified BMW mechanic diagnosed and fixed mine, it was actually a combination of a bad sensor and some wiring issues. Do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly since then, or did you notice any other issues pop up?

Hey there! Glad I can follow up on this. Since my last post, I actually got the issue sorted out completely, it was definitely the fuel pressure sensor that was acting up, just like we thought. The mechanic found it was mainly a faulty cable connection causing all that trouble. Only cost me 95 € to fix, which was a relief because I was worried it might be something more serious! The car's been running like a dream since the repair. No more jerking during acceleration, no stalling at idle, and that annoying check engine light is finally gone. It's amazing how such a small issue can cause so much drama, right? I've put quite a few miles on it since then without any problems popping up. You're smart to get yours checked by a certified BMW mechanic. These cars can be tricky, and it's worth having someone who really knows what they're doing. I've learned my lesson about trying to save money with non-specialized mechanics, sometimes it just ends up costing more in the long run! How's your X7 running now after getting it fixed? Hopefully you're having the same good experience I had!

Thanks for the update! I actually just got back from the mechanic today. You won't believe it, my repair was pretty straightforward too. The mechanic found a loose connector and some corrosion around the sensor area. They cleaned it up, replaced a few small parts, and rewired the connection. The whole thing cost me around 120 bucks, which was way less than I'd feared! The best part is how my X7 runs now, it's like a completely different car! The engine purrs smoothly at idle, no more jerking during acceleration, and that pesky check engine light is finally off. The mechanic also gave me some tips about regular maintenance to prevent similar issues in the future. I'm so relieved I didn't jump to conclusions and replace the entire sensor system like my old mechanic suggested. Sometimes it really pays to get a second opinion and find someone who knows what they're doing. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it helped me make a better decision about how to handle this!
