BMW X7 Rough Idle and Power Loss, Sensor Issues?

Check engine light on

Stalling while idling

Loss of engine power

Hey everyone! My 2022 BMW X7 is acting up. The engine idles rough with fluctuating RPMs and sometimes stalls. When driving, I notice weak acceleration and reduced power. The check engine light is also on. I suspect it might be the rail pressure sensor, but I'm not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What did your mechanic find and how was it fixed? Looking for real experiences before taking it to the shop. Thanks in advance.

Hey there! Had similar problems with my 2020 BMW X5 last year. I'd say I have some experience working on cars, but I still rely on professionals for complex issues. The symptoms you describe sound exactly like what I experienced. After the rough idling and power loss started, I took it to my trusted workshop. Turned out it was indeed a faulty fuel rail pressure sensor, these things can drive you crazy! Cost me about 240 Euro for the fix, including parts and labor. Since then, the car's been running smooth as butter. Before jumping to conclusions though, could you share: Current mileage? Any other warning lights? Did it start suddenly or gradually? My actually had comparable issues with his BMW X3, but his turned out to be something different, so these details would help narrow things down.

Thanks for asking! My X7 has 73621 KM on the clock, and I just had the regular service done last month. The issue started gradually over the past week or so. No other warning lights besides the check engine light. It's good to hear you had a similar experience and got it sorted, that price doesn't sound too bad actually. I'm hoping it's just the sensor like in your case, as everything was perfect before this started happening. Think I'll get it checked by my mechanic this week just to be safe. The rough idling is really starting to worry me, especially during morning starts. Definitely don't want to risk any further damage to the engine.

Hey again! Just saw your reply about the mileage and symptoms. Yeah, that timing sounds very familiar, my issues also started showing up gradually around the 70K mark. Those morning starts were the worst, right? My X5 used to shake like it had too much coffee! I remember being worried about engine damage too, but my mechanic explained that the rail pressure sensor issue usually doesn't cause permanent damage if caught early. That's the good news here. Since you mentioned you just had regular service done, make sure to tell your mechanic about that timing, in my case, it actually helped rule out a bunch of other potential issues. Quick tip from my experience, if you're driving it to the shop, try to avoid heavy acceleration. I found that keeping the RPMs steady helped minimize the rough running until I got it fixed. That's what I did with mine, and it worked out fine. And yeah, the price I mentioned earlier was pretty reasonable considering it was a BMW repair. Fingers crossed it's the same straightforward fix for you. Keep us posted on what your mechanic finds, always good to share these experiences with fellow BMW owners.

Thanks for the extra tips! Really appreciate you sharing your experience and that advice about keeping the RPMs steady, that'll definitely help for the drive to the shop. I've already called my mechanic and booked it in for tomorrow morning. It's reassuring to hear that this shouldn't cause any permanent damage if fixed quickly. I was honestly expecting a much higher repair bill, so your estimate gives me some hope! And you're right about the coffee comparison, that's exactly how it feels during those morning starts. I'll definitely update the thread once I get the diagnosis. Thanks again for all the helpful information!
