BMW X7 Multiple System Failures, Clutch Switch Suspect

Engine hard to start

Hey there, having some weird issues with my 2023 BMW X7. The engine starts rough, gear display isn't showing up in the dash, and cruise control is completely dead. What's really strange is I can start the engine without pressing the clutch. There's also an error code stored. I suspect it might be the clutch pedal switch acting up. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms and got them fixed? Would love to hear what the repair process was like and what exactly was the culprit. Looking forward to your insights!

Hey! I have some experience working on BMWs and dealt with a similar issue on my 2021 BMW X5 last year. The symptoms you're describing sound very familiar, I also had multiple electronic glitches going on at once. In my case, it turned out to be a faulty wiring connection to the clutch pedal sensor. The workshop found that some cables were loose and slightly corroded. They had to replace the connector and rewire it properly. The whole fix cost me 95 Euro and solved all those unusual issues, rough starts, missing gear display, and the cruise control problems. Before I can give more specific advice, could you share: Have you noticed any warning lights? Does this happen every time or intermittently? Any recent work done on the car? Since you've got a newer X7, the exact fix might be different, but given the similar symptoms, it's worth checking the wiring connections first.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My X7 just hit 42499 KM and had its latest service about a month ago. The warning lights are inconsistent, they come and go out of nowhere. The issues started happening right after a heavy rainstorm last week, which makes me think moisture might have gotten somewhere it shouldn't. No recent work besides routine maintenance. Your wiring connection issue sounds pretty similar to what I'm experiencing. Did you notice any correlation with weather conditions when you had your problem? I might take it to the dealership tomorrow to have them look at those connections you mentioned.

Hey again! Yes, actually the weather played a huge role in my X5's issues too! After reading about the rainstorm, I'm even more convinced we had the same problem. In my situation, the symptoms also got worse during wet weather, it was like clockwork. When I had my issue, I actually waited a few days thinking it might resolve once everything dried out, but that was a mistake. The moisture had already done its damage to the connections. The corrosion started spreading, making the problems more frequent. Just to add to my earlier repair story, after they fixed the wiring, they also applied some kind of protective coating to prevent future moisture damage. It's been over a year now, and I haven't had any issues since, even during heavy rain. Given that your car is still quite new with only 42499 KM, this should definitely be covered under warranty. I'd strongly suggest mentioning the rain correlation when you take it to the dealership, it'll help them diagnose it faster. The symptoms are just too similar to what I experienced to be a coincidence. Let me know how it goes at the dealership! I'm curious if they find the same issue as mine.

Thanks so much for all the details about your experience! It's really helpful to know the weather connection worked the same way for you too. I'll definitely mention that rainstorm correlation when I take it to the dealership today. The fact that your fix included a protective coating is especially good to know, I'll ask them about doing something similar for mine to prevent this from happening again. You've saved me a lot of troubleshooting time! It's reassuring to hear your X5 has been problem-free for over a year after the fix. I've already called the dealership and got an appointment for this afternoon. Your suggestion about warranty coverage is spot-on, I checked my paperwork and this should definitely be covered. I'll keep you posted about what they find. Really appreciate you taking the time to share such detailed info about your experience!
