BMW X7 MAF Sensor Issues? Multiple Engine Problems Here

Stalling while idling

|

Poor fuel economy

|

Check engine light on

Hey everyone! Having some serious issues with my 2019 BMW X7. The engine is acting up, sluggish acceleration, unusual jerking, burning through fuel like crazy, and idle speed is all over the place. Sometimes it even stalls. Check engine light is on and failed emissions too. I suspect it might be the mass air flow sensor, but want to hear from others who've dealt with similar symptoms. Has anyone gotten this fixed? What did your mechanic diagnose and how was it resolved? Could really use some real-world experience here.

Hey there! I've got some experience with cars, nothing too fancy but I know my way around engines. Had a pretty similar issue with my 2017 BMW X5 last year. Those symptoms sound exactly like what I dealt with, my car was acting up the same way. Took it to my regular workshop and yep, it was the mass air flow sensor. The repair set me back about 365 Euro, including parts and labor. Honestly, it was worth every penny because it fixed all those annoying problems, the poor acceleration, jerky performance, and high fuel consumption all went away. Before I share more specific details about my repair experience, could you tell me if your X7 is a petrol model, and what's the engine size? Also, have you checked if there are any specific error codes showing up? That would help me give you more relevant advice based on my experience with the X5 (and I've seen similar issues on other BMWs like the X3).

Thanks for sharing your experience! Mine's the gasoline model and just hit 80719 KM on the clock. Got it serviced not too long ago, and everything was fine until these issues started popping up. Haven't pulled the error codes yet, but definitely planning to do that this weekend. Really helpful to know that fixing the MAF sensor solved similar problems for you, gives me some hope! Did your fuel economy go back to normal right after the repair? Mine's drinking fuel like there's no tomorrow right now.

Hey again! Thanks for getting back about your X7. Yeah, my X5 had about 95000 KM when these issues started, so pretty similar situation. And to answer your question, absolutely, the fuel economy bounced back to normal pretty much immediately after the MAF sensor replacement. It was like night and day! Just to share a bit more from my experience, before I got it fixed, I was burning through about 25-30% more fuel than usual. After the new sensor was installed, it went right back to its usual consumption. The jerking and hesitation disappeared completely too. Quick tip though, when you get the error codes checked, if it shows P0101, P0102, or P0103, that's pretty much a dead giveaway it's the MAF sensor. That's what showed up on mine. Also, one thing I learned, these sensors can sometimes get gunked up from poor quality fuel or dirty air filters, so might be worth checking your air filter while you're at it. Don't want to scare you, but if you keep driving with a faulty MAF sensor, it could potentially cause more expensive problems down the line. That's what my mechanic told me, and honestly, I'm glad I got it sorted quickly. Let me know what those error codes say when you check them, curious to see if you're dealing with exactly what I had!

Thanks so much for all that detailed info! It's really reassuring to hear your X5 had such a clear-cut fix for similar symptoms. I'll definitely get those error codes checked this weekend, crossing my fingers for those P0101-0103 codes you mentioned, at least then I'll know exactly what I'm dealing with. Good call about the air filter too, I'll have that checked while I'm at it. You're right about not wanting to risk bigger issues, I'm going to book it in at my regular shop next week. Rather spend the money now on the MAF sensor than end up with a much bigger repair bill later. That 25-30% extra fuel consumption you mentioned matches exactly what I'm seeing, so I'm feeling pretty confident this might be the same problem. I'll update you once I get the codes read and the repair done. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience!

@Dhopen

Bmw 290900 error code keep appearing?

Hello Dhopen, The BMW error code 290900 points to a problem with the air management system, often due to a faulty or dirty mass air flow sensor, leaks in the air intake system, a clogged air filter, or issues with the exhaust gas recirculation system. To address this, check and replace the air filter if necessary, clean or replace the mass air flow sensor, inspect for and repair any leaks in the intake system. If these steps don't fix the issue, consider visiting a professional mechanic or BMW dealership for further assistance. Let me know how it goes or if you have any other questions!
