BMW X7 Idle Stalling: Fix That Fuel System Nightmare

Stalling while idling

|

Check engine light on

Hey all! Having some trouble with my 2023 BMW X7 (gas engine, 153,768 km). The engine's been stalling while idling and the check engine light won't quit. Pulled the error codes and it seems to point towards fuel-related issues. Last mechanic visit was a total nightmare, so I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms with their X7? Looking for recommendations on trusted mechanics who really know their way around BMWs. Thanks!

Hey there! Had a similar issue with my 2020 BMW X5 40i. The stalling and check engine light combo turned out to be a faulty wiring harness connection to the fuel pump module. The connectors had corroded and weren't making proper contact. My previous experience taught me that fuel-related issues on these models can be tricky to diagnose. In my case, the mechanics initially thought it was the fuel pump itself, but after a thorough inspection, they found the wiring issue. It wasn't a major repair, but definitely needed an experienced BMW technician to properly diagnose and fix it. The stalling symptom is pretty concerning, especially at idle. I'd suggest finding a certified BMW specialist rather than a general mechanic. These engines have specific diagnostic requirements, and someone familiar with the platform will save you time and potential misdiagnosis. Best of luck with the repairs.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the X5! That wiring harness issue sounds exactly like what I might be dealing with. I was actually paranoid it was going to be the entire fuel pump assembly, so hearing it could be something less major is a relief. How much did the repair set you back, if you don't mind me asking? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix? Just want to make sure I'm prepared for what might come next.

Hey again! Just wanted to update you, yep, ever since I got it fixed, my X5 has been running like a dream! The mechanic actually found it was an incorrect fuel mixture causing the problems, plus there was this wonky cable connection that needed sorting. All in all, it set me back 95 Euro, which honestly wasn't as painful as I was expecting. The funny thing is, I was convinced like you that I'd need a whole new fuel pump assembly, talk about unnecessary stress! But nope, once they corrected the fuel composition and fixed that dodgy connection, the stalling completely stopped and the check engine light finally gave up its dramatic performance. It's been several months now, and I haven't had a single problem since. The engine runs super smooth, even at idle. No more of that annoying stalling business. You know what they say, sometimes it's the simple fixes that do the trick! Fingers crossed your fix will be just as straightforward as mine was. These BMWs can be drama queens sometimes, but usually, there's a pretty logical explanation for their tantrums!

Update on my BMW saga, finally got it sorted! Took your advice and found a certified BMW specialist. Turns out you were spot on about the wiring issue. The mechanic discovered some corroded connections near the fuel pump module, pretty similar to what you experienced. The repair was way smoother than my last mechanic visit. Got it all fixed up in a couple of hours, they replaced the damaged wiring and cleaned up the connections. Cost me around 120 Euro, which wasn't too bad considering I was bracing for much worse. The best part? No more stalling! The engine's running like new again, and that pesky check engine light has finally gone dark. Should've done this weeks ago instead of stressing about it. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, saved me from possibly getting ripped off for a whole new fuel pump. Now I can finally enjoy driving my X7 again without worrying about it conking out at every red light!
