BMW X7 Door Lock Sensors Drive Owner Crazy

Vehicle cannot be unlocked or locked

Hey everyone! Having a headache with my 2020 BMW X7 (192,656 km). The central locking system's acting up, getting error messages about doors not being closed, can't lock/unlock properly, and the auto-lock while driving isn't working either. Pretty sure it's the door contact sensor playing up. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm a bit hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar door lock issues on their X7? What was the actual problem and how much did the repair cost? Thanks for any insights!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2017 BMW X5 last year. The symptoms were pretty much identical, unusual door lock warnings, central locking going crazy, and those annoying false "door open" messages while driving. Took it to the garage and turned out the wiring harness in the driver's door was damaged, causing intermittent connection problems with the door contact sensor. They had to replace the entire door wiring harness and reprogram the control module. It wasn't a quick fix, kept my car for two days. It's definitely not something you want to ignore, as faulty door locks can become a safety issue. In my case, the problem started small but got worse over time. The good news is that once fixed, it's been working perfectly since then. Have you checked if the issue happens with specific doors or all of them? That might help narrow down if it's a wiring issue or the actual control module.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful as it sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. Mostly getting issues with the driver's side too. Would you mind sharing what you paid for the repair? Just trying to get a rough idea before I head to the shop. Also, curious if you've had any other electrical gremlins pop up since getting it fixed?

Hey again! Great to hear back from you! Actually, I just got my X5 back from the mechanic last week for that exact same door sensor issue I mentioned earlier. Much better news than my previous repair, this time it was just a faulty cable connection that needed fixing, nothing major like the whole wiring harness replacement I had before. Only cost me 95 € this time around, which was a massive relief compared to my previous repair. The door contact signal issue is completely gone now, no more unusual warnings or locking problems. Everything's working like a charm! And to answer your question about other electrical issues, nope, haven't had any other gremlins pop up since either of the repairs. Think they really got to the root of the problem both times. These BMWs can be finicky with their electronics sometimes, but once you get them sorted, they're usually pretty solid. Sounds like you might have a similar issue to what I just had fixed. Hopefully it's just the simple cable connection for you too, rather than needing the whole harness replaced like my first time!

Thanks for all the info! Just wanted to update you on what happened with my X7. Finally got it checked out yesterday, you were spot on about it being similar to your experience. Turned out to be a loose connection in the driver's door wiring, plus some water damage that made things worse. The mechanic I found was actually great, really took the time to explain everything. Got it all fixed up in about three hours, and the bill came to around 150 for parts and labor. Way better than I was expecting! The best part? No more unusual door warnings popping up on my dash, and the central locking's working perfectly again. Such a relief to have it sorted. Think I've found my new go-to mechanic too, what a difference compared to my last one. Really appreciate everyone's help on this. Sometimes it just takes finding the right mechanic to fix these things properly!
