BMW X7 Cold Start Issues: Fuel Injector Problems?

Engine noise when cold

|

Engine hard to start

Hey all, my 2022 BMW X7 has been acting up lately, especially during cold starts. Engine runs rough, struggles to start, and burns more fuel than usual in cold conditions. I suspect the cold start injector might be the culprit. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to hear about your repair experiences and what the workshop actually found and fixed. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Hey there! I've got some experience with BMWs and had a similar issue with my 2020 BMW X5 last winter. Actually, I also have an older X3 in the garage. The symptoms you're describing sound really familiar, I had the exact same problems. After taking it to my regular workshop, they diagnosed a faulty fuel injector. The fix wasn't cheap (515 Euro), but it solved all those issues, rough running, hard starts, and the excessive fuel consumption. Before you jump to conclusions though, could you share: How many miles/kilometers are on your X7? Are you getting any warning lights? Have you noticed any black smoke from the exhaust? This info would help me understand if you're dealing with the same problem I had. The repair was worth every penny in my case, car's been running smooth as silk since then.

Thanks for the detailed response! My X7 just had its latest service, and I'm currently at 12006 KM. No warning lights on the dash, but I do notice a bit of black smoke occasionally during those cold starts. It's super frustrating because everything else about the car runs perfectly. I'm planning to take it to the workshop next week, but wanted to gather some insights from the community first. Good to know about your experience with the injector replacement, helps me mentally prepare for the potential cost!

Hey again! Thanks for the follow-up. Based on what you're describing and comparing it to what I experienced with my X5, this really does sound like the same injector issue I dealt with. The black smoke during cold starts is particularly telling, that's exactly what I was seeing before I got mine fixed. With such low mileage on your X7 though, you might be in luck as this should definitely be covered under warranty! I paid out of pocket for mine since my X5 was just out of warranty when it happened. Quick tip from my experience, get them to check the electrical connections to the injector too. My mechanic found that there was a slight corrosion issue on one of the connectors that was contributing to the problem. They cleaned it up while doing the replacement, and it made a noticeable difference. Since you're heading to the workshop next week, make sure to ask them to check the fuel pressure during a cold start specifically. Sometimes these symptoms can also be related to the fuel pump not building enough pressure quickly enough in cold conditions. They found this was fine in my case, but it's worth checking. Let me know how it goes at the workshop, I'm curious to see if it turns out to be the same issue I had!

Thanks so much for all the helpful advice! Really appreciate you taking the time to share those details, especially about checking the electrical connections and fuel pressure. I'll definitely bring these points up when I take it in next week. It's such a relief to know someone else dealt with the same problem and got it sorted. Since I'm still under warranty, I'm feeling much more confident about getting this fixed now. I'll make sure to update the thread once I get it checked out, might help other X7 owners who run into similar issues. Thanks again for your help, it's exactly the kind of firsthand experience I was hoping to find here!
