Brake light not working

Looking for advice with my 2021 BMW X7! My brake light switch seems faulty, and I'm getting error messages in the dash along with a brake light failure warning. It's a gas model with 68k km. Has anyone dealt with this before? Not looking to get ripped off at the mechanic again, what was your repair experience and cost like?

I had a similar issue with my 2019 BMW X5 40i last month. The brake light switch malfunction is actually a common problem across several BMW models. When it happened to my car, I got those same warning messages and the brake lights were acting up. Took it to the garage and it turned out the brake light switch had completely failed, it's a small electronic component that tells your car's computer when you're pressing the brake pedal. The mechanic mentioned this was a known issue they've fixed quite a few times. The repair itself wasn't too complex, mainly involved replacing the switch assembly. It was a relatively quick job, maybe 2 hours total. This isn't something you'd want to ignore though, since it affects both your brake lights and cruise control functionality. Just make sure they use an OEM part for the replacement. Some aftermarket switches don't work properly with BMW's electronic systems and can trigger more error codes down the line.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My X7 is showing those exact same symptoms right now. I feel a bit better knowing it's a known issue and not something major. Would you mind sharing how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also curious if you've had any other electrical issues pop up since getting it fixed? I'm trying to decide between the dealer and an independent BMW specialist.

Hey there again! Just wanted to follow up about my X5 brake light switch situation. You'll be relieved to hear this turned out to be much simpler than expected. When I took it to the mechanic, they actually found that the switch wasn't broken at all, it just needed a proper reset! Apparently, this can happen sometimes with these models. The best part? It didn't cost me anything since it was just a mechanical error that needed a quick fix. Since having it looked at, everything's been working perfectly, no more warning lights or error messages. The brake lights are functioning exactly as they should, and I haven't had any electrical gremlins pop up since. Really glad I got it checked out though, because these warning lights can sometimes point to more serious issues. For what it's worth, I totally understand wanting to avoid getting overcharged. My previous experiences with repairs haven't always been so lucky, so this was a nice change! Hope this helps with your decision-making process.

Thanks for the extra details about your experience! I actually just got back from the mechanic today and wanted to update you. Funny enough, my situation turned out different from yours. The switch was completely dead and needed replacement. The mechanic showed me the old part, it was pretty corroded inside. The total bill came to about €400, including parts and labor. They used a genuine BMW part, which was a bit pricey but worth it for peace of mind. The whole thing took about an hour and a half. While I was there, they did a quick check of the other electrical components and everything else looked good. You were right about getting it checked quickly, the mechanic mentioned ignoring it could've led to bigger problems. The car's running perfectly now, no more warning lights or error messages. Really appreciate your advice, helped me know what to expect when I went in!
