BMW X7 Boost/Sensor Issues: Whistling and Power Loss

Loss of engine power

Whistling noise

Check engine light on

Hey everyone! I have a 2020 BMW X7 with some concerning symptoms. The engine light is on, power feels down, and there's a whistling/hissing sound during acceleration. The error scan points to a charge air temp sensor issue. Has anyone dealt with this before? Would love to hear about your repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be. Just trying to get prepared before taking it to the shop. Thanks in advance!

Hi there! I have some experience working on BMWs and went through something very similar with my 2018 BMW X5. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I dealt with. Mine turned out to be a loose connection at the charge air temp sensor plug. The workshop found that the cable had worked itself loose, causing intermittent readings and those exact symptoms, check engine light, power loss, and that distinctive whistling noise. The fix was pretty straightforward, they reconnected and secured the plug properly, and everything went back to normal. Cost me 95 Euro for the diagnostic and repair work. Been running perfectly since then. Before I can share more specific advice, could you share: How many miles/kilometers are on your X7? When did these symptoms first appear? Have you had any recent work done on the engine? By the way, if you're hearing that whistling sound, I wouldn't wait too long to get it checked out. Worth getting it sorted quickly to prevent any potential damage to other components.

Thanks for the detailed reply! I'm at 73092 KM and just started noticing these issues last week, right after my latest service actually. Your experience with the loose connection sounds promising, definitely less scary than what I was imagining! Will get it checked out this week. Really hoping it's something as simple as what you dealt with on your X5.

Hey again! Just following up on this, glad you're getting it checked soon. You mentioning it started right after your service actually rings a bell. After I had that loose connection issue with my X5, I learned that it's pretty common for these sensors to get disturbed during routine maintenance. The timing of your symptoms (right after service) makes me even more convinced it's probably similar to what I experienced. The techs sometimes need to move things around to access other parts, and these connectors can end up not being clicked back in properly. Since you mentioned your mileage is at 73092 KM, you're actually right about where I was when I had my issue (I was around 70000 KM). One thing I should mention, when I first took my X5 in, they initially thought it might need a new sensor altogether, but it turned out to be just the connection. Quick tip: when you take it in, make sure to mention it started after the service. Could save you some diagnostic time and money. I sure wish I had made that connection earlier with mine! Let us know how it turns out, I'm really curious if it ends up being the same issue as my X5. These BMWs can be quirky sometimes, but they're usually pretty straightforward to fix once you pinpoint the problem.

Thanks so much for following up and sharing those extra details! You've definitely put my mind at ease. I'll make sure to mention the service timing when I take it in, that's such a helpful tip. Makes total sense about things getting moved around during maintenance. I've got an appointment scheduled for tomorrow morning, and I'm feeling much more confident now about what to expect. I'll definitely update this thread once I know what's going on with my X7. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and knowledge about these BMW quirks!

The error code 0029E1 in your BMW E92 325i with the N53 engine typically relates to a fuel injector issue. The jerking and rough running you’re experiencing could be due to a faulty injector or a problem with the injector wiring. Start by checking the injector connections for any loose or corroded contacts. If the connections seem fine, it might be worth having the injectors tested or cleaned. Let me know how it goes or if you have any further questions!
