BMW X6 Won't Start: Ignition Issues or Something Else?

Car won't start

Engine shuts off by itself

Shaking while idling

Need help with 2022 BMW X6 starting/running issues! Having trouble with my X6 lately, engine won't start sometimes, cuts out while driving, and runs rough when it does work. I suspect it might be the ignition switch. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to hear about your repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be. What did your mechanic do to fix it?

I had a very similar issue with my 2020 BMW X4 last year! I have some experience working on cars, but this one had me stumped initially. My symptoms were almost identical, unusual starting problems and engine cutting out. After taking it to my regular workshop, it turned out to be just a blown fuse in the ignition circuit. Pretty simple fix, they replaced the faulty fuse, and everything's been running smoothly since. Total bill was 52 Euro, mostly labor costs. Could you share more details about when these issues typically occur? Like, does it happen more when the engine's cold or warm? Also, are you getting any warning lights on the dash? This info would help narrow down if we're dealing with the same problem. I also own a BMW X3, and these models share quite a bit of electrical architecture, so I might be able to offer more specific advice once I know more about your situation.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I'm having these issues regardless of engine temperature, and there's no warning lights showing up. My car has 64540 KM on it and just had its service last month, which makes this even more frustrating. I've noticed it happens more frequently when I try to start the car after it's been parked for a few hours. The engine cranks but sometimes takes several attempts to actually start. I was hoping it would be something as simple as a fuse like in your case, that repair cost sounds way better than what I was imagining! Did you notice any specific sounds or behavior before your fuse issue was discovered? I'd love to compare notes since our situations sound pretty similar.

Oh hey again! Thanks for those extra details about your X6. You know what's interesting, my situation started pretty much the same way, with that stubborn starting after being parked for a while. But looking at your symptoms now, I'm actually thinking it might not be a fuse like mine was. In my case, when it was just the fuse, the engine wouldn't crank at all sometimes, just a clicking sound. Your symptoms, especially the rough running and cutting out while driving, are making me think it could be fuel-related. Actually, after I fixed my X4's fuse issue, I had a similar problem about six months later that turned out to be a faulty fuel pump. Before you head to the dealer, try listening carefully next time you turn the key to "ON" position (before starting). You should hear a slight humming sound for about 2 seconds, that's your fuel pump priming. If you don't hear it, or if it sounds whiny, that might be your culprit. Also, since you mentioned your recent service, did they change the fuel filter? These BMWs can be pretty sensitive about fuel system maintenance. My regular mechanic always says these modern direct injection engines are really picky about clean fuel delivery. I'd definitely get it checked soon though, don't want to risk getting stranded like I did with my fuel pump issue!

Thanks for that detailed response! I just went out to my car and tried the key trick you mentioned. You're right, the humming sound isn't as clear as it should be, kind of weak and inconsistent. That fuel pump theory makes a lot more sense than my ignition switch guess, especially since the symptoms match up better. No, they didn't change the fuel filter during my last service, they just did the usual oil change and inspections. I'm going to call my mechanic tomorrow and specifically mention checking the fuel system and pump. This has been super helpful! Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experiences and troubleshooting tips. Hopefully it won't be too expensive of a fix, but at least I have a better idea of what I'm dealing with now. I'll definitely update once I find out what's actually causing the problem. Much better to deal with it now than end up stranded somewhere!
