BMW X6 Suspension Gone Soft: Damper System Troubles Help?

Fault stored

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Hey everyone! I'm having trouble with my 2016 BMW X6. The suspension feels really soft and doesn't absorb bumps properly. The speedometer warning light is on and the diagnostic shows some error codes. I suspect it's related to the damping adjustment system. Has anyone dealt with similar issues? Really interested to hear what the repair process was like and what exactly needed fixing. Thanks in advance for any insights!

Hey there! I have some experience working on BMWs. I actually had a similar issue with my 2014 BMW X5 last year (I also own a BMW 5 series). The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I experienced. The suspension felt like a marshmallow, and I had those warning lights too. Turned out it was a faulty cable connection to the damping control unit. My trusted workshop found that the connector was corroded and wasn't making proper contact. The fix wasn't too complicated, they cleaned the connection points and replaced the damaged cables. Cost me 95 Euro and the car has been running perfectly since then. No more warning lights or suspension issues. Could you share which error codes you're getting? That would help pinpoint if it's the same problem I had. Also, how many miles/kilometers do you have on your X6? Sometimes these issues start showing up at certain mileage points.

Thanks for the detailed response! My X6 has done 30280 KM and had its last service about 3 months ago. I'm getting the error code 5E24 on the diagnostic. The issue started right after I drove through some heavy rain last week. Really hoping it's just a connection problem like yours and not something more serious. The soft suspension is making the car really uncomfortable to drive. I'll definitely get those cables checked out.

Hey again! I totally hear you about the discomfort, that soft suspension feeling is the worst. That error code 5E24 is actually what I saw on my X5 too. And interestingly, my issues also started after some wet weather! After what happened with my car, I'd bet money it's the same connection problem. The rain probably got into those connectors and started the corrosion process. What's good news is that if it's the same issue I had, it's a relatively quick and inexpensive fix. One thing I learned from my experience, if you're planning to get it fixed, do it sooner rather than later. I initially tried to "live with it" for a few weeks, but that just made driving really unpleasant, especially on highways. Plus, leaving it unfixed could potentially cause more damage to the damping system over time. Just make sure whoever works on it knows their way around BMW suspension systems. My regular mechanic actually referred me to a specialist because these systems can be a bit tricky. Definitely worth finding someone who knows what they're doing. Let me know how it goes, really curious if it turns out to be the same issue I had!

Thanks so much for all the helpful advice! You've honestly made me feel a lot better about this situation. It's such a relief to hear that someone else had the exact same problem, especially with the same error code and everything! I've actually just called a BMW specialist and booked the car in for tomorrow morning. The fact that your fix was relatively simple and affordable is really encouraging. You're absolutely right about getting it sorted quickly. I've only been dealing with this for a week and I'm already tired of feeling like I'm driving on jelly! I made sure to mention to the specialist about checking the cable connections and potential corrosion from the rain, just like you suggested. They seemed to know exactly what I was talking about. I'll definitely keep you posted about what they find. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, it's made this whole situation much less stressful. Fingers crossed it's just those pesky cables and nothing more serious!

Let our mechanics help you!
