BMW X6 Rail Sensor Causing Stalling and Power Issues

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Stalling while idling

Hey everyone! Got a bit nervous about my 2012 BMW X6 (88195 KM). The engine's acting up, rough idle with power drops, occasional stalling, and sluggish response when I hit the gas. The check engine light is also on. Had a scan done and it points to a rail pressure sensor fault. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Really want to avoid another nightmare mechanic experience, so I'd appreciate hearing about your repair experiences and rough cost estimates. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I faced almost identical issues with my 2015 BMW X5 35i last year. The symptoms you described match exactly what I experienced, rough idle, power loss, and that annoying check engine light. The rail pressure sensor fault was indeed the culprit. In my case, the sensor was completely shot and needed replacement. While the repair itself wasn't extremely complex, it's definitely not a DIY job since it's connected to the fuel system. The mechanic also found some debris in the fuel system that needed cleaning. It's a serious issue that needs prompt attention because it can lead to further fuel system damage if left unchecked. Mine started misfiring more frequently before I got it fixed, but the car ran like new after the repair. I'd strongly recommend having it checked by a certified BMW technician. My local shop needed about 4 hours to complete the job, including system testing and cleaning. The car's been running perfectly since then, no issues whatsoever. Best of luck with the repair.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That really helps. Sounds like I'm dealing with the exact same problem as you did. I'm actually going to book it in at a certified shop this week based on your advice. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for everything? And has everything been running smoothly since the repair, or have you noticed any other little quirks popping up?

Hey again! Just wanted to follow up, yes, everything's been running absolutely perfect since I had it fixed! It was actually quite simple in the end, the rail pressure sensor was definitely the problem. The total bill came to 240 € for the sensor replacement, and honestly, it was worth every penny. Like night and day difference after the repair, no more rough idling, power drops completely gone, and the engine's running super smooth now. It's been about a year, and I haven't had a single issue pop up since. The car feels just as responsive as it should be. My mechanic mentioned these sensors can get finicky over time, but once replaced, they usually last for ages. Getting it done at a certified shop was definitely the right call, they knew exactly what they were dealing with. Hope your repair goes just as smoothly! Let us know how it turns out.

Just wanted to update everyone, got my X6 back from the shop today! What a relief. Took it to a certified BMW mechanic and they confirmed it was indeed the rail pressure sensor. The whole experience went way smoother than I expected. Cost me around 280 € total, a bit more than what you paid, but they also did a thorough fuel system cleaning while they were at it. Money well spent though, the car's running like a dream now. No more stalling, rough idle's completely gone, and the power delivery is back to normal. Even my fuel economy seems better! Really appreciate everyone's input, especially about going to a certified shop. They definitely knew their stuff and got it sorted quickly. Drove it home feeling like I got my car back, that smooth BMW performance I've been missing. Thanks again for helping me avoid another dodgy mechanic experience! Best money I've spent on the car in a while. Now I can finally enjoy driving it again without constantly worrying about those strange noises and power drops.
