Thanks Mark for sharing your experience! I've got 138078 KM on my car and just had a service last month. I'm getting the error code C1B38 and there's absolutely no noise when trying to adjust the wheel, completely dead. Honestly, I'm relieved to hear it might just be a wiring issue. Was worried I'd have to replace the entire steering column unit. Will definitely get it checked out by a professional. Really appreciate the detailed response, it's given me some hope that this won't break the bank!
Hey again! Ah yes, that error code C1B38, it definitely rings a bell! You know what's interesting? My X5 had almost the same mileage (around 142,000 KM) when this happened. The complete silence when trying to adjust is exactly what I experienced too. Just to give you some peace of mind, when my mechanic dug deeper into it, they found that these issues are pretty common in our BMW X series around this mileage. The wiring harness tends to get a bit worn where it flexes near the steering column. In my case, a few wires had actually started to fray slightly, which caused the connection issues. One thing I forgot to mention in my first reply, before taking it to the shop, I did try disconnecting the battery for about 15 minutes to reset the system (always worth a shot with electrical issues), but it didn't help. Sounds like your issue is pretty much identical to what I dealt with. Let me know how it goes with the repair. Would be interesting to hear if it's the same root cause. These BMWs can be tricky with electrical stuff, but usually, it's not as bad as it first seems!
Thanks again Mark, really helpful info! Just got back from my trusted mechanic and you were spot on! It was indeed a wiring harness issue, though in my case two of the wires had completely separated. The total repair came to 120 Euro, which included them cleaning up the entire connection area and securing the harness better to prevent future issues. They mentioned they've seen this problem quite a bit with the X series BMWs. Funny you mentioned the battery disconnect trick, I actually tried that too before taking it in! Had the same result as you though, absolutely no change. Should've known it wouldn't be that simple, but I guess it's always worth trying the easy fixes first. The steering column adjustment is working perfectly now. Moves smoothly and quietly, just like when the car was new. Really glad I asked here before panicking and assuming the worst. You saved me a lot of worry with your experience! Thanks again for all your help! Will definitely keep an eye on that wiring harness area during future services. Best regards.
Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2012 BMW X5 (also had an X3 before). I'd say I have some experience working on cars, but I mainly trust my mechanic for electrical issues. The exact same thing happened to me, steering column adjustment completely dead and throwing error codes. Took it to my regular workshop and they found it was just a loose connection in the wiring harness near the steering column. The cables had worked themselves loose over time. They had to remove some trim panels to access it, but it was a fairly straightforward fix. Cost me 95 Euro for the diagnostic and repair work. Could you share what error code you're getting? Also, does the steering wheel make any noise at all when you try to adjust it? This info would help determine if you're dealing with the same issue I had.
