BMW X6 Power Loss: IAT Sensor Issue Needs Expert Fix

Check engine light on

Hey car enthusiasts, need advice about my 2017 BMW X6 (gas engine, 128k km). My check engine light is on and I'm experiencing reduced power. The diagnostic shows it's likely a faulty intake air temperature sensor. After a bad experience with my previous mechanic, I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms on their X6? What was the actual problem and did you find a reliable mechanic to fix it? Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2020 BMW X5 (gas engine) last year. The symptoms were exactly like yours, check engine light and noticeable power loss, especially during acceleration. Initially thought it was something major, but turned out the intake air temperature sensor was indeed the culprit. When I brought it in, my mechanic found that the sensor had accumulated carbon deposits and was giving incorrect readings to the ECU, causing the engine to run rich. The fix wasn't too complicated, the sensor was replaced and they cleaned the surrounding area of the intake manifold. The whole job took about an hour. It's not a serious issue if addressed promptly, but ignoring it could lead to poor fuel economy and potential engine performance problems long-term. Best advice is to get it fixed soon, a faulty sensor can throw off your air-fuel mixture, and you don't want that affecting other components. Make sure whoever works on it uses OEM parts for the sensor replacement.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! It's really helpful to hear from someone who went through the same thing. That actually sounds exactly like what's happening with my X6. Would you mind telling me how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also curious if you've had any other sensor-related problems since getting it fixed?

Hey again! Glad I could help! Just wanted to follow up, I actually got the issue fixed last week. They replaced the faulty intake air temperature sensor and it cost me 155 € total. The car's running perfectly now, no more check engine light and the power's back to normal. Since you asked, I haven't had any other sensor problems since the repair. The whole thing was way less dramatic than I initially feared. My engine's running smoother than before, and I've even noticed slightly better fuel economy. One thing I learned, these sensors can get dirty over time, so it's worth having them checked during regular maintenance to catch issues early. Much cheaper than waiting for them to fail completely! Let me know how yours turns out. It's always good to share experiences with fellow BMW owners!

Just got back from the mechanic and wanted to update you! The whole experience turned out better than expected. Found this experienced BMW specialist who diagnosed it right away, and yes, it was exactly what you'd mentioned. They did a thorough cleaning of the intake area and replaced the sensor. The total came to about 170 €, a bit more than what you paid, but they also did a quick system check while they were at it. The car's running like a dream now! No more check engine light and the power's completely back to normal. What a relief it wasn't something more serious. Thanks again for sharing your experience, really helped calm my nerves about the whole situation. I'll definitely keep an eye on regular maintenance from now on. Good to know these BMWs can be a bit sensitive with their sensors, but at least it's manageable when you know what to look for!
