BMW X6 MAP Sensor Failure Causing Power Loss & Issues

Loss of engine power

|

Longer cold start time

|

Poor fuel economy

|

Check engine light on

Looking for advice, X6 running rough with MAP sensor issues? Driving a 2020 BMW X6 (gas) with 147,909 km. Engine's been acting up lately, power drops significantly, fuel economy is terrible, and check engine light stays on. Previous mechanic wasn't great, so I'm skeptical about going back. Pretty sure it's the manifold pressure sensor but wanted to hear if anyone's dealt with similar symptoms in their X6? What was your repair experience and cost? Any reliable mechanic recommendations would be appreciated.

I had nearly identical symptoms with my 2018 BMW X4 last summer. The rough running and power loss were really noticeable, especially during acceleration. My check engine light also came on intermittently. Turned out to be a major vacuum leak where the intake manifold meets the cylinder head. The gasket had completely failed, causing incorrect MAP sensor readings. The mechanics had to remove the entire intake manifold to replace the gasket and clean the sensor. It was definitely a serious issue that needed immediate attention since it was affecting engine performance and could have led to more damage if left unfixed. The repair took about 6 hours, but my car has been running perfectly since then, restored power, normal fuel consumption, and no more warning lights. If you've got similar symptoms, I'd strongly suggest getting it checked soon. Vacuum leaks tend to get worse over time.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! That does sound exactly like what I'm dealing with. My X6 has been driving me crazy with these symptoms. The vacuum leak diagnosis makes a lot of sense given how my car's been behaving. If you don't mind me asking, do you remember roughly how much the repair set you back? Also, has everything stayed running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other issues pop up? Would really help me know what I might be looking at cost-wise and if I should expect any follow-up problems.

Hey there! Just wanted to follow up on your questions. After getting my X4 fixed, I'm happy to report it's been running like a dream, absolutely no issues since the repair. The mechanic confirmed it was indeed a faulty manifold pressure sensor causing all that trouble, and fixing the large vacuum leak sorted everything out perfectly. The total bill came to 235 € for parts and labor, which honestly wasn't as bad as I'd feared given how much the performance issues were worrying me. Money well spent considering how smooth everything's running now, back to normal power, fuel consumption's way better, and that annoying check engine light is finally gone for good. Trust me, once you get it sorted, you'll notice the difference immediately. My X4 feels like a completely different car now, no more power drops or rough running. Just make sure you get it checked soon, these kinds of issues tend to get worse if you leave them too long. Let me know if you need any other info about the repair. Happy to share more details about my experience if it helps!

Thanks so much for all that detailed info! I bit the bullet and took my X6 to a mechanic last week. You were spot on, it was a vacuum leak causing the MAP sensor to give wrong readings. Had it fixed and wow, what a difference! The repair cost me a bit more than yours, around 300 € total. The mechanic was really thorough though, checked everything while they had it apart. They found the gasket was completely shot and replaced it along with cleaning the sensor. It's like driving a completely different car now. No more sluggish acceleration, fuel consumption is back to normal, and that annoying check engine light is finally off. Should've done this weeks ago instead of worrying about it! Really glad I asked here and got your advice about getting it checked promptly. Thanks again for helping me out with this. Definitely saved me from potentially bigger problems down the road by encouraging me to get it fixed right away!
