Hey, thanks for sharing that! Really helpful info as I'm dealing with exactly the same problem right now. I went ahead and got it fixed based on similar advice, but I'm curious, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, has everything been working smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other quirks with the keyless system? Just want to know what to expect in the long run with my X6.
Hey there! Happy to help update you on my experience. The key battery replacement and reprogramming cost me 37€ total, which was actually pretty reasonable considering it solved the "Battery in key empty" warning completely. Since getting it fixed, my key fob has been working flawlessly, no more warning messages or issues with the keyless entry at all. It's been super reliable. I was actually quite relieved it turned out to be just a battery/programming issue rather than something more serious with the receiver module like I initially feared. Haven't noticed any quirks or problems with the system since the repair. The mechanic did mention these key fobs usually need a battery replacement every 2-3 years, so I've made a mental note to keep track of that. Honestly, you shouldn't have any further issues with your X6's keyless system now that it's been properly sorted. These BMW key fobs are pretty solid once they're taken care of properly. Let me know if anything else comes up though!
Thanks for the follow-up! I actually just got back from the mechanic today. You were spot on about everything. My repair ended up being pretty straightforward, just needed a new battery and quick reprogramming. The whole thing took less than an hour. Initially, I was really worried it would be some major electrical issue, but thankfully it wasn't. The mechanic I found was much better than my previous one. Super transparent about what needed to be done and didn't try to upsell me on unnecessary repairs. They even showed me how to check if the key fob battery is getting low to avoid future issues. Everything's working perfectly now, no more warning messages, and the keyless entry is responding like new. Really glad I asked here before panicking and taking it to the dealer. Saved myself some time and money! Thanks again for all your help with this.
I had the same issue with my 2019 BMW X4 last winter. Initially thought it was just a dead key fob battery, but it turned out to be more complex. The key fob itself wasn't communicating properly with the car's receiver module. At the garage, they had to reprogram the key and replace the battery. The warning message disappeared right after, and the keyless entry started working perfectly again. If you're getting the "Battery in key empty" warning, try replacing the battery first, it's a CR2032 type. But if that doesn't solve it, the receiver module might need attention. In my case, it was a serious enough issue that required dealer-specific diagnostic tools to fix. Just keep in mind that modern key fobs are pretty sophisticated, they're not just simple remote controls anymore. If you're not comfortable with the previous mechanic, look for one who specializes in BMW electronic systems.
