BMW X6 Injector Issues? Multiple Engine Symptoms Help

Loss of engine power

|

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

|

Poor fuel economy

|

Stalling while idling

Hey everyone! Having trouble with my 2010 BMW X6 and need your input. Engine's acting up, jerking during acceleration, burning more fuel than usual, power feels weak, and stalling at idle. Also noticed smoke coming out when I hit the gas. I suspect it might be the injection system, but wanted to hear from anyone who's dealt with similar symptoms. What did your mechanic diagnose and how was it fixed? Any rough cost estimates would be helpful too. Trying to get this sorted before it causes more damage to the engine. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I've got some experience working on BMWs (low experience). I had a similar issue with my 2012 BMW X5, and my X3 before that. Those symptoms sound really familiar, my X5 was doing the exact same dance with jerking, fuel consumption going crazy, and those power issues. Turned out it was a loose connection in the fuel injector wiring harness. The mechanic found that one of the cables had worked itself loose over time, causing all sorts of weird behavior. The fix wasn't too bad, cost me around 95 Euro to get the wiring properly secured and tested. Before I can help more specifically though, could you share: Any warning lights on your dash? When did these symptoms start? Have you noticed any particular patterns (like does it happen more when the engine's cold or hot)? Honestly, with BMWs of that generation, electrical connections can be tricky. Better to get it checked soon, these issues tend to get worse if left alone.

Thanks for chiming in! My ride's at 21513 KM since I got her, with the latest service done just a couple months ago. Was actually hoping it wouldn't be an electrical issue, but what you're saying makes a lot of sense. No warning lights on the dash, which is what's been throwing me off. The symptoms started about two weeks ago, and I've noticed it's definitely worse when the engine is cold, especially during morning starts. After it warms up, the jerking gets a bit better, but the power issues are still there. Considering the price you mentioned for the fix, that would be a relief compared to what I was imagining. Might just take it to the dealer this week to get those connections checked out. Really appreciate your detailed response!

Hey again! Thanks for those details, it definitely helps paint a clearer picture. You know, after dealing with my X5's issues, I've learned quite a bit about these quirks. The cold-start symptoms you're describing actually remind me even more of what I went through. Initially, I thought it was just the wiring, but after my mechanic did a deeper dive, we found out the injector seals were also leaking slightly. That explained why it was worse during cold starts, the seals would contract more in cold temperatures. In my case, the final fix involved replacing both the wiring harness AND the seals. Ended up costing about 280 Euro total, but it was worth every penny. The car runs like new now, no more jerking, fuel consumption's back to normal, and that annoying smoke is gone. Since you're at 21513 KM, it's right around the time these issues can pop up. From my experience with both BMWs, these engines are pretty solid, but they can be sensitive to small fuel system issues. The fact that you don't have any warning lights is actually pretty common with these particular problems, had the same situation with my X5. If you're heading to the dealer, ask them to specifically check the injector seals along with the wiring. Could save you a second trip if both need attention. Keep me posted on what they find!

Thanks so much for that additional insight, really helpful stuff! The injector seals definitely sound like they could be the culprit, especially since the symptoms match up so closely with what you experienced. That price range is actually much more reasonable than I was expecting, even with both the wiring and seals needing work. I've just booked an appointment with the dealer for tomorrow morning. Will definitely have them check both the seals and wiring harness like you suggested. Makes total sense to tackle both at once rather than having to go back if they only fix one issue. You've really helped put my mind at ease about this whole situation. Was honestly worried it might be something catastrophic, but this sounds totally manageable. Will definitely let you know what the dealer finds and how it all works out. Thanks again for sharing your experience, this is exactly the kind of firsthand knowledge I was hoping to get!
