Thanks for your detailed response! Currently at 187813 KM and just had my service last month. You're spot on about the symptoms, glad to hear you got yours sorted. I do mostly short trips which probably isn't helping the DPF situation. No other warning lights showing up besides the DPF one. I've been watching the onboard computer, and it seems to start regeneration but never completes the cycle. Interesting that your sensor replacement fixed it, that's way more reasonable than I was expecting cost-wise. Did you notice any difference in fuel consumption after the repair? I'm thinking of getting it checked at the workshop this week before it gets worse.
Hey again! Yeah, I remember when I had those DPF issues with my X5. After fixing the sensor and getting everything sorted, I definitely noticed some changes in fuel consumption, actually got better by about 2-3 liters per 100km. It's crazy what a faulty sensor can do to these engines! Those short trips you mentioned are probably not doing you any favors, had the same issue myself when I was doing lots of city driving. After my repair, I made sure to take at least one longer drive weekly to help with regeneration cycles. Makes a huge difference! 187k km isn't too bad actually, mine was around 165k when I had the sensor problem. One thing I didn't mention in my first reply, after the repair, I also started using a higher grade diesel fuel, and it seems to help keep things running smoother. Definitely get it checked soon though. The repair cost I mentioned earlier was just for the sensor, but if you leave it too long, it could clog up the DPF completely. I learned that the hard way with my previous car! A new DPF would cost way more than just fixing the sensor. Have you noticed any other symptoms lately? Like changes in engine sound or more smoke than when you first posted?
Thanks for all that helpful info! No other new symptoms since my first post, engine sound is the same, and smoke levels haven't changed. That's really interesting about the fuel consumption improvement you saw. I'll definitely keep that in mind. I've actually already called the workshop and booked it in for tomorrow morning. You've convinced me not to wait around, especially hearing about the potential DPF replacement costs! After getting it fixed, I'll try to change up my driving pattern like you suggested. Maybe I'll start taking the longer route home from work to help with those regeneration cycles. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it's given me a much better idea of what to expect. I'll probably switch to premium diesel too once it's fixed. Thanks again for all the advice!
Hey there! I've got some experience with BMW diesels, nothing too major but I've dealt with similar issues on my 2016 BMW X5 diesel before. Man, those DPF problems can be super annoying! Had almost identical symptoms last year, warning light, sluggish performance, the works. Turned out my exhaust back pressure sensor was shot, just like you're suspecting. Took it to my regular workshop, and they diagnosed it pretty quickly. The fix was straightforward, sensor replacement plus a forced DPF regeneration. Set me back about 245 Euro, but the car's been running like a charm since then. Before I can give you more specific advice, could you share: Current mileage? Any other warning lights? How's your driving pattern, mostly city or highway? When was your last DPF regeneration? Keep in mind the X5 and X6 share a lot of components, so there's a good chance we're looking at the same issue here.
