BMW X6 Diesel Cold Start Issues, Fuel Heater Problems?

Unsteady engine

|

Poor fuel economy

|

Loss of engine power

|

Fault stored

Longer cold start time

Hi all! Having trouble with my 2019 BMW X6 diesel. When it's cold outside, the engine struggles to start and runs rough at idle. Also noticed a significant power drop, sluggish response, and my fuel consumption has gone through the roof. The diagnostic shows an error code. I suspect it might be the fuel filter heater, but I'm not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Curious to know what repairs were done and how it worked out. Would really appreciate any insights on the fix. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I've got some experience working on cars and had a similar issue with my 2017 BMW X5 diesel last winter. Really sounds like what you're describing, mine was acting up just the same way, especially during cold starts. Turned out it was indeed a faulty connection in the fuel heater wiring harness. Took it to my regular workshop where they diagnosed and fixed the cable connection issue. Cost me about 95 Euro, and it's been running perfectly since then. My actually has an X4 and had similar problems too. Before I can provide more specific advice, could you share: Have you noticed any warning lights? What's the actual error code you're getting? How many miles/kilometers has your X6 done? These details would help me understand if you're dealing with the exact same problem I had. Quick tip: don't wait too long to get it checked, these issues can affect your engine's performance if left unattended.

Thanks for the detailed response! Mine's at 81330 KM and just had its service last month. Been getting the P0093 error code consistently, and yeah, the check engine light keeps coming on. Really helpful to hear about your experience with a similar issue, gives me some hope it might not be too serious. Does the repair work hold up well in your case? Wondering if I should take it to the dealership or if a good independent workshop would do just fine. Just want to make sure it's fixed properly since winter's coming up.

Hey again! Glad to help follow up. Yeah, my repair has held up really well since I got it fixed, it's been over a year now and no issues at all, even during the coldest days. My X5 is running at about 95,000 KM now, and it's performing just like new. That P0093 code is exactly what I was getting too! It's definitely that fuel system pressure regulator thing. When I got mine fixed, the mechanic showed me how the wiring connection had corroded a bit, which was causing all those symptoms we discussed. About where to get it fixed, honestly, I went with my trusted independent workshop and haven't regretted it. The dealership quoted me nearly triple the price for basically the same repair. Just make sure wherever you go, they're familiar with BMW diesels. My mechanic actually specializes in German cars, which made me feel more confident. Quick tip from my experience, after the repair, I started using a higher quality diesel fuel and it seems to help prevent any similar issues. Also, try to keep your tank at least quarter full during cold weather, learned that one the hard way! Let me know how it goes when you get it fixed. Always good to compare notes on these things, especially with these particular models.

Thanks so much for all that info, it's exactly what I needed to hear! Really glad I asked here before heading straight to the dealership. I'm feeling much more confident now about getting this sorted, especially knowing you've had the same exact error code and symptoms with your X5. Think I'll follow your advice and check out a few independent workshops that specialize in German cars. Makes total sense to save some money if I can get the same quality repair. I'll definitely keep that tip about better quality diesel and fuel levels in mind too, anything to prevent future issues is worth knowing! I'll update here once I get it fixed. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and all those details about your repair. It's helped me understand exactly what I'm dealing with. Hopefully, I'll be back soon with good news about a smooth-running engine!
