BMW X6 Brake Light Warning, Switch or Something More?

Brake light not working

Hey there car enthusiasts, having some trouble with my 2020 BMW X6 (35k km, gas engine) and could use your advice. The instrument cluster is showing a brake light error message and there's a stored error code. I suspect it might be the brake light switch causing these issues. Had a pretty disappointing experience with my last mechanic, so I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their X6? What was the actual problem and how much did the repair cost? Also, any recommendations for getting this fixed properly? Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I can relate to your brake light situation. I had a similar issue with my 2018 BMW X4 last year. The symptoms were exactly what you're describing, warning light and error code. Initially thought it was just the switch, but turned out the brake light wiring harness had some corrosion and needed replacement. The connector pins were also damaged. This wasn't just a quick fix, the entire wiring setup for the brake lights needed attention. The mechanic found that moisture had gotten into the system over time. It was quite serious since faulty brake lights are a major safety concern. My advice? Don't wait on this one. While it could be just the switch like you suspect, there might be underlying issues that need addressing. The brake light system is pretty complex in these newer BMWs, and it's worth getting it checked by someone who really knows these models. Good luck with the repair!

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! My BMW's been in the shop for about three weeks now and I'm getting it back tomorrow. Sounds pretty similar to what happened to your X4. If you don't mind me asking, how much did you end up paying for all that work? Also, has everything been working fine since the repair, or have you noticed any other electrical gremlins popping up? Just trying to get an idea of what I might be dealing with down the road.

Hey again! Actually, my situation turned out way better than expected! It's kind of funny now, turned out I was worried over nothing. After taking it to the mechanic, they found it was just a faulty brake light switch, exactly what you originally suspected with yours. The best part? It didn't cost me anything because it was just a mechanical error, the switch needed a proper reset. Nothing like the complex wiring issues I initially thought I had. Much simpler than all that corrosion and wiring harness drama I mentioned before. The mechanic just reset it and everything's been working perfectly since then. So, no electrical gremlins or any other issues popping up in my X4. It's been smooth sailing since that fix, which was about a year ago now. Really relieved it wasn't anything serious like I first thought. Hope your repair turns out to be something simple too! Let us know how it goes when you get your car back tomorrow. Trust me, sometimes these BMW electrical issues sound scarier than they actually are!

Just got my car back and wanted to update you all! Man, what a rollercoaster this has been. Turns out my issue was actually pretty serious. The mechanic found multiple problems, not just the brake light switch, but also some damaged wiring and a faulty control module. The repair bill hit me hard, around 1200 bucks total. They had to replace the entire brake light assembly and some electrical components. Honestly, wish it had been as simple as your reset situation! But hey, at least it's fixed now and everything's working perfectly. The silver lining? Found a really honest mechanic through this whole ordeal. He showed me all the damaged parts and explained everything clearly. Way better than my last guy who always seemed to be hiding something. Thanks again for sharing your experience, even though my situation turned out differently, it really helped to hear from someone who'd been through something similar. Now I just hope this fix lasts!
