A/C System Not Engaging

Hi everyone! My 2013 BMW X6 is having A/C issues. The system won't turn on at all and there's no cooling. I scanned it and there's an error code stored. I suspect it might be related to the A/C compressor shutdown, but I'm not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with similar A/C problems on their X6? Would really appreciate hearing about your repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be. Thanks in advance

Hey there! I have some experience working on BMWs. I actually faced a similar issue with my 2015 BMW X5 last summer (I also own a 3 Series). The symptoms were exactly the same, no A/C, complete system shutdown. After taking it to my regular workshop, they diagnosed it as an undervoltage problem that was causing the A/C compressor to shut down as a safety measure. The repair cost me around 240 Euro, and it's been working perfectly since then. Can you share some additional details about your X6? Like: Are there any other electrical issues? Does the fan blow at all, just without cooling? When did this start happening? Have you noticed any unusual noises before it stopped working? With more info, I might be able to help determine if you're dealing with the same problem I had.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My X6 has 42381 KM and had its last service about 3 months ago. To answer your questions, the fan does blow but there's no cooling at all. The issue started about a week ago, and I haven't noticed any strange noises. Everything else electrical seems to work fine. It's interesting that you mentioned the undervoltage issue, I'm starting to think it might be something similar since the symptoms match up. Did you notice any warning lights on your dash before the A/C stopped working? I'm hoping it's just a voltage problem like yours and not a complete compressor failure.

Hey again! Thanks for providing those details about your X6. You know what's really interesting, your symptoms are incredibly similar to what I experienced. With my X5, I also didn't get any warning lights before the A/C stopped working, it just suddenly decided to quit on me one day. Since you mentioned everything electrical is working fine and there were no weird noises (just like in my case), I'm even more convinced it could be that same undervoltage issue. Especially since your mileage isn't that high and you've kept up with regular service. Quick question, have you tried turning off the A/C completely, waiting about 10 minutes, and then restarting it? This was actually one of the troubleshooting steps I tried before taking it to the workshop. It didn't fix the problem, but it helped the technicians confirm it was indeed the voltage regulator causing the compressor to shut down. Also, given that your last service was just 3 months ago, you might want to check if this would be covered under any service warranty. I initially thought I'd be stuck with a huge repair bill, but it turned out to be a relatively straightforward fix. Since your symptoms are matching up so closely with what I experienced, I really think you might be looking at the same issue.

Thanks so much for the detailed response and suggestions! I actually tried the 10-minute reset trick you mentioned just now, but unfortunately, it didn't help. Still, it's really reassuring to hear that your similar issue had a straightforward fix and wasn't too expensive. I'll definitely check about the service warranty, that's a great point I hadn't thought about. I feel much better knowing this might just be a voltage regulator problem rather than a complete compressor failure. I've scheduled an appointment with my mechanic for tomorrow morning, and I'll make sure to mention your experience with the undervoltage issue. It's super helpful to have this information going in, so I don't just blindly accept whatever they tell me might be wrong. Thanks again for taking the time to help me troubleshoot this. It's really put my mind at ease about the whole situation!
