BMW X5 Warning Lights Chaos: Emergency Call System Alert

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Hi all! Need some advice about my 2003 BMW X5 (gas engine, 29,781 km). Having issues with multiple error messages popping up on both the speedometer and nav screen, along with warning lights. Pretty sure it's related to the emergency call system. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar issues? What was the actual problem and did you find a trustworthy mechanic to fix it? Thanks in advance for any help!

Hey there! I had a similar situation with my 2006 BMW X3 last year. The emergency call system was throwing multiple errors and warning lights too. After checking it at the garage, turned out the main wiring harness connector to the emergency call module was corroded and had some loose pins. The mechanic located it under the dashboard, cleaned the connection points, and replaced the damaged connector. It wasn't a major repair, but it needed proper diagnostic equipment to pinpoint the exact issue. This kind of problem is pretty common in these older BMW models, especially if water somehow gets into those connectors. While not a serious mechanical issue, it's important to fix it since the emergency call system is a safety feature. My suggestion would be to look for a shop that specializes in BMW electronics. Make sure they have the right diagnostic tools, that's crucial for these systems. Hope this helps with your X5!

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! That's super helpful and sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. My mechanic mentioned something about corroded connections too, but I wanted to get a second opinion. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also, has everything been working fine since then, or have you noticed any other electrical gremlins popping up? Really appreciate your help with this!

Hey again! Glad I could help! Yes, everything has been working perfectly since I got it fixed, no more error messages or warning lights popping up at all. The emergency call system has been functioning just as it should. I paid 95 € for the repair, which included diagnosing the issue and fixing that faulty cable connection to the emergency call module. Honestly, it was worth every penny to get rid of those annoying warning messages and know the safety system is working properly again. I can totally understand wanting a second opinion, these electrical issues can be tricky and you want to make sure you're not getting taken for a ride. But in this case, if your mechanic is seeing corroded connections like mine did, they're probably on the right track. These BMW electronics can be sensitive, but once they're fixed properly, they usually stay fixed. Haven't had a single electrical gremlin show up since the repair!

Thanks so much for all the details! I actually just got my car back from the mechanic yesterday. You were right, it was exactly the same issue with corroded connections. Had to pay a bit more, around 120 €, but the mechanic did a thorough job. They showed me the old corroded parts and explained everything clearly. The best part? No more annoying warning lights or error messages popping up! The dashboard is finally back to normal, and the emergency call system is working perfectly. Such a relief to have this sorted. Really appreciate everyone's help in pointing me in the right direction. Sometimes these electrical issues can be super stressful, but it turned out to be a pretty straightforward fix in the end!
