Thanks for the detailed response! My X5 is actually at 25856 KM since the latest service, and I'm getting the P1017 error code. The rough idle is definitely worse when the engine is cold, and there's a slight rattling noise from the intake area, especially during acceleration. I was hoping to avoid a shop visit, but your experience is making me think it's worth just getting it done properly. Did you guys replace just the valve or the whole unit? The cost seems reasonable if it fixes all these issues I'm having.

Hey again! Yeah, with that P1017 code and the symptoms you're describing, especially that rattling noise during acceleration, it's definitely the DISA valve, just like what I dealt with on my 330i. In my case, we went with replacing the complete unit rather than just the valve. Initially, I was tempted to only replace the valve to save some money, but my mechanic advised against it. He said that with these units, if the valve's gone bad, other components might be worn too. Made sense to me, and I didn't want to risk having to do the job twice. The rattling noise you're hearing is actually quite typical for a failing DISA valve, had the exact same thing. It's basically the flap inside not working properly anymore. The cold start issues are another dead giveaway. My car used to sound like it was going to die every morning until it warmed up. Since you're at 25856 KM after your last service, it's actually about the right time these issues typically show up. For reference, mine started acting up around the same mileage. The complete unit replacement sorted everything out, no more stalling, rough idle's gone, and power delivery is back to normal. Trust me, getting the complete unit replaced is the way to go. Those 280 Euro were well spent in my case, and I haven't had a single issue since. Your X5 should run like new afterward.

Thanks for such a thorough reply! With everything you've shared and my symptoms matching up so perfectly, I'll definitely go ahead with replacing the complete DISA unit. Really helpful to hear about your actual experience with the repair, especially knowing that partial fixes might not be the best long-term solution. The cost seems totally reasonable considering all the issues it'll fix. Think I'll schedule the repair for next week and finally get rid of these annoying problems. Just glad to know I wasn't imagining things with that weird rattling noise! Can't wait to have my car running smoothly again. Seriously appreciate you taking the time to share all those details about your repair experience, helped me make up my mind for sure.

Hey there! I have some experience working on BMWs and had a similar issue with my 2003 BMW 330i. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I went through, and it turned out to be the DISA valve. My 530i-owning had the same problem too. Fixed it about 8 months ago, took it to my regular workshop and they confirmed the diagnosis. The complete DISA unit needed replacement, cost me 280 Euro but it was totally worth it. Engine ran smooth as butter afterward, and all those annoying symptoms disappeared. Before we jump to conclusions though, could you share: Any specific error codes? Does the rough idle happen more when the engine is cold or warm? Have you noticed any unusual noise from the intake? This would help confirm if we're dealing with the same issue. From my experience with BMWs, it's pretty common with these models, but better to be sure before you spend the money.
