BMW X5 Diesel Running Rough? Intake Manifold Warning Signs

Jerking on acceleration

|

Loud hissing on acceleration

|

Loss of engine power

|

Poor fuel economy

|

Shaking while idling

Hey car enthusiasts, need some advice about my 2018 BMW X5 diesel (154k km). My engine's been acting up lately, and after a sketchy experience with my last mechanic, I want to hear your thoughts. The engine feels weak, runs rough and jerks during acceleration, plus there's this loud hissing noise. Also noticed I'm visiting the gas station more often these days. I suspect it might be an intake manifold flap issue. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? If so, what was the actual problem and did you get it fixed at reasonable cost? Looking for recommendations from those who've been there. Thanks in advance!

Hey there, I dealt with nearly identical symptoms on my 2015 BMW X3 30d last month. The sudden power loss, jerky acceleration, and that distinct hissing sound were exactly what I experienced. Took it to the garage, and the diagnostic confirmed it was indeed the intake manifold control flap system. The actuator had failed, causing improper air distribution. The manifold flaps weren't opening and closing as they should, which explained the poor performance and increased fuel consumption. It was definitely a serious issue that needed immediate attention since it was affecting engine performance and could've led to more damage if left unchecked. The repair involved replacing the intake manifold control unit and actuator. They also cleaned the entire intake system while they were at it. Been running smooth since the fix. No more hissing, power's back to normal, and fuel economy has improved significantly. Based on your symptoms, I'd say you're likely dealing with the same problem.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with right now. Really glad to hear it got sorted for you. Been worried about taking it back to the shop, but your successful fix gives me hope. Would you mind sharing how much it set you back? Also curious if anything else popped up since the repair? My X5's been full of surprises lately, so I'm trying to budget for any potential follow-ups.

Hey again! Glad to help follow up on this. You know what, the intake manifold flap control issue got completely sorted when I took it in, cost me 465 € for the switch replacement, but honestly, it was worth every penny. The car's running like a dream now. Since the fix (it's been about six weeks), everything's been perfect, no more hissing, no jerking, and the engine's got its punch back. Fuel consumption's back to normal too, which is a nice bonus for the wallet! Haven't had any other issues pop up either. I know BMWs can be full of surprises with repairs, but this particular fix seems to have nailed the problem right on the head. My mechanic mentioned these intake manifold issues are pretty common on our models, so at least we're not alone. Just make sure whoever does the work uses genuine BMW parts, that's what I did and it seems to have made the difference. Trust me, once you get it sorted, you'll feel the difference straight away. It's like getting a new car again!

Just got back from the mechanic and wow, what a difference! Took your advice about getting it fixed right away. The whole experience wasn't nearly as painful as I expected. Funny enough, my repair bill came in slightly higher at 520 €, but the mechanic found a small vacuum leak they fixed while they were in there. The hissing's completely gone now, and the engine feels strong again, it's like night and day! Taking off from stops is smooth, and I've already noticed I'm using less fuel. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it helped me stop second-guessing and just get it done. Feels great to have my reliable BMW back. Sometimes it's just about finding the right advice and getting the job done properly. Think I'll stick with this mechanic too, they seemed to know their stuff with BMWs. They even gave me some maintenance tips to prevent similar issues in the future. Thanks again for helping me sort this out!
