BMW X4 Window Failure: How to Fix Dead Power Windows

Fault stored

|

Power windows malfunction

Hi all! Having issues with my 2022 BMW X4 (gas). Power windows completely stopped working and there's a stored error code. Suspecting a faulty window regulator. Has anyone dealt with this before? Would like to know what repairs were done and how your workshop fixed it. Any input appreciated. Thanks!

Hey! I had a similar issue with my 2020 BMW X3 last year. I've got some experience working on cars, but electrical stuff isn't my forte. The symptoms were exactly like yours, all power windows stopped responding. Took it to my regular workshop and turned out it was just a defective master power window switch on the driver's side. Complete replacement including labor cost me around 200 Euro, and it's been working perfectly since. Which windows aren't working on yours, all of them or just specific ones? Also, could you share the error code you're getting? That would help pinpoint if you're dealing with the same issue I had. Feel free to message back with those details, and I might be able to help more specifically! Ben

Thanks for sharing your experience, Ben! In my case, all four windows are affected, completely unresponsive. Just had my service done at 6241 KM and everything was working fine until yesterday. Got error code U0164 from my OBD scanner. Not sure if I should try resetting the window controls first or head straight to a workshop. Really hoping it's just the master switch like in your case and not something more serious!

Hey there again! Thanks for sharing those details. That error code rings a bell, U0164 is typically related to communication issues between modules. Though my 2020 X3 had similar symptoms, after hearing your code, I'm thinking your issue might be a bit different from what I experienced. Before I took mine to the workshop, I actually tried resetting the windows (holding the switches down for about 10 seconds after the window is fully closed), but that didn't help. Since you mentioned all four windows are affected like mine were, and given that error code, you might be dealing with a communication problem in the body control module rather than just a switch issue. I'd suggest taking it to a workshop rather than trying more DIY fixes. Since your car is a 2022 model with such low mileage, this should definitely be covered under warranty. No point risking anything by tinkering too much with it yourself. Let us know what you find out, I'm really curious if it ends up being something different from my switch issue. These newer models have much more complex electronics than my previous cars, so there's always something new to learn! Ben

Thanks a lot for the detailed follow-up, Ben. You're probably right about taking it to the workshop instead of attempting DIY fixes. Given that it's still under warranty, that's definitely the safer route. Just booked an appointment for tomorrow morning, so hopefully they can sort it out quickly. The communication module issue you mentioned makes sense, especially since it happened so suddenly and affected all windows at once. Really appreciate your help and sharing your experience, even though it might be a different issue, it's good to know what other X-series owners have dealt with. Will definitely update the thread once I get it diagnosed and fixed. These modern cars are amazing when everything works, but when electrical gremlins show up, they sure can be tricky! Thanks again for the guidance!
