Hey, thanks so much for sharing your experience! I'm actually dealing with almost the exact same thing right now with my X4. Just wanted to follow up, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair job? And has everything been running smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other transmission-related issues pop up? Really appreciate your help with this!
Hey again! Happy to give you an update. After taking my X3 to the mechanic last week, they confirmed it was indeed a faulty transmission oil temperature sensor causing the problems. They also found the gearbox oil level was too low, just as I suspected from my earlier post. The total repair bill came to 365 € which included fixing both issues. Was a bit steep but definitely worth it to get everything running properly again. Since the repair, my car's been shifting like a dream, no more grinding noises, warning lights are gone, and the transmission's working perfectly. Haven't had a single problem since then. Really glad I got it sorted before any serious damage could happen. If you're experiencing similar symptoms, I'd definitely recommend getting it checked out soon. These transmissions are pretty complex, and small issues can turn into bigger problems if left unchecked. Let me know if you need any other info!
Thanks for the detailed follow-up! I actually just got back from the mechanic today, and boy, what a journey it's been. Decided to bite the bullet and take it to a specialist after our chat. Turns out it wasn't just the temp sensor, they found a small leak in one of the transmission seals too. The whole repair set me back about 500 bucks, which was more than I hoped for but less than I feared. They had to replace the sensor, fix the leak, and do a proper transmission fluid flush. Took them about a day and a half to sort everything out. Just drove it home and it's like I've got a completely different car! No more clunking, grinding, or warning lights. The shifts are butter smooth now. Really glad I didn't wait any longer to get it fixed, sounds like I caught it just in time before any serious damage happened. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it definitely helped me make the decision to get it checked out sooner rather than later. What a relief to have this sorted!
Hey there! Had a similar situation with my 2017 BMW X3 last year. Those symptoms sound exactly like what I experienced, rough shifting, grinding, and warning lights. Took it to the garage and turns out my gearbox oil level was critically low, which caused the transmission to overheat and go into limp mode. The oil had slowly leaked through a damaged seal. It was quite serious as running low on transmission fluid can cause permanent damage to the gearbox. The fix involved replacing the leaking seal, flushing the transmission, and refilling with new fluid. They also had to reset the transmission control module. The whole job took about two days, but it's been shifting smoothly ever since. Given your mileage and symptoms, I'd definitely get it checked soon before any permanent damage occurs. Make sure whoever works on it uses genuine BMW transmission fluid, that's super important for these cars. Hope this helps give you an idea of what you might be dealing with.
