Uneven Ride Height

Hi there! I've got a 2020 BMW X4 (gas engine) with about 15k km on it and I'm dealing with some suspension/height issues. The car sits noticeably uneven between front and rear, and my low beams are misaligned. There's a warning light on the dash, and the diagnostic shows a height control fault. After a bad experience with my last mechanic, I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms with their X4? Any recommendations on what to look out for or how to get this properly fixed? Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2017 BMW X3 last year. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I experienced, uneven ride height and that annoying warning light. Mine turned out to be a faulty control rod sensor that was giving incorrect readings to the suspension control unit. When I took it to the garage, they had to replace both the sensor and the wiring harness connected to it. It was a serious issue that needed immediate attention because it affects the entire suspension system and could lead to uneven tire wear and poor handling. The repair took about a day and a half because they needed to calibrate the new sensor and run multiple tests to ensure the suspension was working correctly. Since the fix, my car has been running perfectly level, and all warning lights cleared up. My advice would be to get it checked soon. These suspension issues don't fix themselves and usually get worse over time. Make sure whoever works on it has experience with BMW's electronic suspension systems. Best of luck!

Thanks for sharing your experience! Your fix sounds exactly like what I might be dealing with. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? And has everything been working smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other quirks with the suspension?

Hey again! Happy to update you! Yes, after getting it fixed, everything has been working like a charm. The total bill came to 110 € for replacing the defective control rod sensor. I'd say it was money well spent, the car's been running perfectly level since then, and that annoying "Height control restricted" warning hasn't shown up again. It's been over a year now, and I haven't had a single issue with the suspension. The handling is spot-on, and the ride height stays consistent no matter what. Really glad I got it sorted when I did, these things can definitely get worse if you leave them too long. Trust me, once you get it fixed, you'll notice the difference right away. The whole car just feels more stable and balanced. Let me know how it goes when you get yours checked out! Take care!

Thanks so much for all the details! I actually just got back from the mechanic today. You were right, it was indeed the control rod sensor causing all the trouble. My repair bill was a bit higher at 150 € since they had to replace some additional wiring, but honestly, it's such a relief to have it fixed properly. The whole repair process took about two days because they wanted to do thorough testing. The mechanic I found was really knowledgeable about BMWs, which made me feel much more confident than my last experience. They even showed me the faulty parts and explained everything. The difference in driving is like night and day! The car sits perfectly level now, those annoying warning lights are gone, and the headlights are properly aligned again. It's amazing how one faulty sensor can cause so many issues. Really appreciate your help in pointing me in the right direction. It definitely made me feel better knowing someone else had dealt with and resolved the same problem! Thanks again!
