BMW X4 Speedometer & Headlight Issues, Owner Seeks Help

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

|

Headlamp leveller malfunction

|

Fault stored

Hey everyone! My 2018 BMW X4 (gas) has been acting up lately. The speedometer warning light is on, there's an error stored in memory, and the low beam headlights are misaligned (pointing too high/low). I suspect it might be a headlight range control issue. Has anyone dealt with something similar? Would love to hear what the actual problem was and how your mechanic fixed it. Looking for real experiences before taking it to the workshop. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars and had a similar issue with my 2016 BMW X3 last year. I feel your pain! The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I dealt with. It turned out to be a faulty headlight servomotor. The workshop diagnosed it using their computer system, and they had to replace the entire servomotor unit. The repair set me back about 1040 Euro, but it fixed all the issues, the warning light, error message, and the misaligned headlights. Can you share more details about your X4? Like mileage and whether you've noticed any other electrical issues? Also, have you had any recent work done on the headlights? This info would help me give you more specific advice based on my experience with BMW's headlight systems. BTW, I'd suggest getting it checked soon because driving with misaligned headlights can be dangerous, especially at night.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My X4 just hit 27840 KM and had its latest service about a month ago. No other electrical issues so far, and I haven't had any work done on the headlights before. Good to know about the servomotor, that definitely sounds like it could be the culprit in my case too. The timing of the service and these issues starting up is making me wonder if something got knocked loose during the maintenance. I'll definitely get it checked out soon. Really appreciate the heads up about the repair costs too, helps me know what to expect!

Thanks for the update on your X4! You know, after I got my X3 fixed, I remembered something that might be relevant to your situation. Since you mentioned the timing with your recent service, it actually reminds me of what happened with mine. Initially, I thought the servomotor just failed on its own, but my mechanic later told me that sometimes these issues can pop up after routine maintenance if the headlight calibration isn't done correctly. In my case, we first tried recalibrating the headlight system which was a lot cheaper than replacing the servomotor right away. But since your symptoms are identical to what I experienced, I'd bet you're dealing with the same servomotor issue I had. The timing with your service could be coincidental, these units tend to start failing around the 25-30K mark anyway. Just make sure when you take it in, they do a proper diagnostic. My mechanic initially thought it might be just a sensor, which would've been cheaper, but the computer scan showed it was definitely the servomotor. Are you still getting that same warning light constantly, or does it come and go? With mine, it started intermittent but became constant after a week or so.

Really appreciate all this detailed info! The warning light is actually exactly like you described, it started coming on intermittently but now it's pretty much constant. It's super helpful knowing about the calibration possibility too, I'll definitely ask them to check that first before jumping straight to replacing the servomotor. Though from what you're saying, with my mileage and the symptoms matching yours so closely, I'm mentally preparing for the servomotor replacement. At least now I can go to the workshop better informed and won't be completely shocked by the repair costs. The tip about getting a proper diagnostic scan first is great too, I'll make sure they don't just assume it's a sensor issue. Thanks again for all your help with this, it's made me feel a lot more confident about getting it sorted!
