BMW X4 Power Loss? Failing CCV Valve May Be The Culprit

Check engine light on

|

Loss of engine power

Hi all! I'm concerned about my 2015 BMW X4 (167k km, gas engine). The check engine light is on, and I'm experiencing power loss and inconsistent speeds. I suspect it might be the crankcase ventilation valve, but I had a pretty sketchy experience with my last mechanic. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to hear your experiences with repairs and trusted mechanics. Thanks in advance!

I had the exact same symptoms on my 2012 BMW X3 last year. Rough idle, power loss, and the engine would surge out of nowhere while maintaining speed. The check engine light prompted me to visit my regular mechanic. Turned out the crankcase ventilation valve (PCV) was completely clogged. In my case, it was a serious issue because it had created excessive pressure in the engine, which also damaged the valve cover gasket. The repair included replacing both the PCV valve and the valve cover gasket. The job took about 5 hours at the shop. It's not something you want to ignore, if left unfixed, it can cause oil leaks and potentially damage other engine components. Since the repair, my X3 has been running smooth with no power issues. Based on your symptoms, it sounds very similar to what I experienced. Make sure to get it checked soon by a qualified BMW specialist.

Thanks for sharing your experience! This really sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. It's good to know I'm not the only one who's faced this. I'm definitely going to get it checked out ASAP. Hey, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other issues pop up?

Hey there! Glad I could help with my previous response. Just wanted to update you, yes, everything has been running perfectly smooth since I got it fixed. Not a single problem with the engine performance. I paid exactly 360€ for the crankcase ventilation valve repair, and honestly, it was money well spent. The annoying power issues and irregular speeds completely disappeared after the fix. My X3 is performing like new now, no more rough idling or those frustrating power drops. It's such a relief not having to deal with those unusual engine surges anymore. You know that feeling when your car just runs the way it should? That's what I got back after the repair. Trust me, getting it fixed was the best decision. The peace of mind alone was worth every penny. Good luck with your repair, let us know how it turns out!

Thanks so much for all the info! I actually just got back from the mechanic today. You were spot on, it was the crankcase ventilation valve. The total came to around 400 for parts and labor, which wasn't as bad as I feared. The funny thing is, I ended up finding a great mechanic through my neighbor. When I walked into the shop, I was impressed by how clean and organized everything was. The mechanic took the time to show me the old valve and explained everything. Such a different experience from my last repair shop! Best part? My X4 is running like a dream now. No more power loss, no more check engine light, and the engine's purring like it should. Thanks again for helping me figure this out. It's such a relief to have this sorted!
