BMW X4 Dying While Driving: Ignition Switch or More?

Car won't start

Hey everyone! Having trouble with my 2016 BMW X4 (193k km, gas engine) and need your input. The car's acting up, won't start sometimes, out of nowhere dies while driving, and runs really rough when it does work. I think it might be the ignition switch, but after a bad experience with my last mechanic, I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their X4? What was the actual problem and how much did the repair cost? Also, would appreciate recommendations on dealing with mechanics for this type of issue. Thanks in advance.

I experienced very similar issues with my 2019 BMW X3 last year. Initially thought it was the ignition switch too, but turned out to be a faulty fuse box and corroded wiring harness connections. The symptoms matched exactly, unusual stalling, rough running, and intermittent starting problems. After dealing with this, my advice is to have a proper diagnostic done at a shop that specializes in BMW electrical systems. In my case, moisture had gotten into the main fuse box, causing multiple issues. The fix wasn't just about replacing parts, they had to clean several connection points and replace some damaged wiring. It was a serious electrical issue that could've left me stranded if not addressed. For mechanics, I'd suggest asking them to show you the diagnostic results and explain exactly what they find before starting any repairs. My current mechanic did this, and it made a huge difference in understanding what was actually wrong versus what I assumed was the problem.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know about the fuse box and wiring, definitely sounds similar to what I'm experiencing. Would you mind sharing what the repair ended up costing you? Also curious if you've had any other electrical gremlins pop up since getting it fixed? Really appreciate the tip about asking for the diagnostic results first. Makes total sense to know exactly what's wrong before they start working on it. Thanks! Alex

Great to hear back from you! Just wanted to update, I actually got the issue resolved last week. While I initially thought it was similar to my previous fuse box problem, turns out it really was the ignition switch in my case! Had to pay 52€ for a blown fuse they found and fixed during the inspection too. The mechanic did exactly what I suggested, showed me the diagnostic results before starting the work. Really glad I followed my own advice there! Since the repair, my X3's been running like a dream, no more unusual stalling or rough starts. Haven't had a single electrical issue pop up since. The whole experience reinforced how important it is to get a proper diagnosis. Sometimes what seems like the same problem can have different causes, even in similar BMW models. Hope this helps with your decision-making!

Just wanted to give you an update on my situation! Finally got my car checked out yesterday. You won't believe it, turned out to be a combination of issues. The mechanic found a cracked fuel pump and some damaged sensors. The diagnostic really helped spot everything that was wrong. The repair was pricey but worth every penny. The shop was super transparent, showed me all the damaged parts and explained everything before starting the work. Car's running perfectly now, no more stalling or rough starts. Really grateful for your advice about getting that proper diagnosis first. Saved me from just blindly replacing the ignition switch, which wouldn't have fixed the actual problem. Think I've finally found a trustworthy mechanic too, they were honest and professional throughout. Thanks again for all your help!
