Thanks for sharing your experience! That's super helpful since I'm dealing with almost the exact same problems. If you don't mind me asking, what did the repair end up costing you? Also, have you had any other issues pop up with the sensor or soft top since getting it fixed? I'm trying to budget for this and want to know if I should expect any follow-up problems.

Hey again! Happy to follow up about my X3 repair. After getting it fixed up at the certified shop, I haven't had a single problem with either the sensor or the soft top, it's been working perfectly. The repair bill came to 1000 € for sorting out the defective control unit, and honestly, it was money well spent considering it's a crucial safety component. The best part is that annoying airbag warning light finally stopped haunting my dashboard! I know it wasn't cheap, but when you're dealing with safety systems, it's better to get it done right. I was actually pretty relieved it was just the control unit and not something more complex in the whole airbag system. I'd say go ahead and get it sorted, having peace of mind knowing your safety systems are working properly is worth every penny. Just make sure you get it done at a shop that really knows their BMWs. Haven't had to think about it since the repair, which is exactly what you want with these kinds of fixes.

Thanks again for all the details! I actually just got back from a certified shop today. You were spot on about getting it done right, I bit the bullet and had them do the full repair. The mechanic found the same issue with the rollover sensor unit, and while the price tag wasn't fun (around 1200 with labor), at least everything's working perfectly now. The whole process was way smoother than my last repair experience. They had the right diagnostic tools and really knew what they were doing. The best part? No more warning light staring at me from the dashboard! The soft top's working smoothly again too. Much better than stressing about whether my safety systems were actually going to work when needed. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it helped me make the right call instead of trying to find a cheaper fix somewhere else. Sometimes you just have to pay a bit more to get things done properly, especially with these complex systems. Thanks again for steering me in the right direction!

Had the same issue on my 2014 BMW X3 last summer. The airbag warning and intermittent system failures were definitely concerning. Turned out the rollover sensor and its control unit were faulty, not just throwing codes, but actually defective. Got it properly diagnosed at a certified BMW shop. The rollover sensor is a critical safety component that controls both airbag deployment and soft top operation. In my case, they had to replace the entire sensor unit and recalibrate the system. Not something you want to ignore or have done by someone inexperienced with BMW safety systems. The repair wasn't a quick fix, took them about two days as they had to run extensive tests after installation to ensure everything was working correctly. Worth getting it sorted though, considering it's a major safety component. If you're getting those symptoms, I'd really suggest heading to a certified shop. These sensors can malfunction from water damage or just age, but they need proper diagnostic equipment to fix correctly.
