Thanks for sharing your experience! My X3 28i is actually well-maintained with regular services, last one was just 2 months ago at 48144 KM. The symptoms started quite suddenly last week while driving on the highway. Haven't pulled the error codes yet, but planning to do that tomorrow. Really good to know about your similar experience with the torque converter. That repair cost is pretty much what I was expecting, though definitely not looking forward to it! Did you notice any warning signs before it completely went into limp mode? I'm wondering if I missed any early symptoms that could have prevented this situation.

Hey again! Thanks for the additional info about your X3. You know, looking at your mileage and maintenance history, it's actually quite similar to what happened with my X1. Mine was also well-maintained but started acting up around 50,000 KM. To answer your question about warning signs, honestly, in my case, there weren't many obvious ones. Maybe a week before it went into limp mode, I noticed slightly delayed engagement when shifting from Park to Drive, but I brushed it off as nothing serious. Big mistake! One day on my commute, boom, same scenario as yours, sudden drop in power and all those warning lights. I actually kick myself for not paying attention to that slight delay because addressing it earlier might have prevented the full failure. After my repair, my mechanic mentioned that these transmissions can sometimes give subtle hints before completely failing, like that slight hesitation I experienced. Since you caught it early and your car's well-maintained, you might be in better shape than I was. But if it is the torque converter, don't wait too long to get it fixed. The grinding noise especially can cause additional damage if left unchecked. Let us know what those error codes show when you get them pulled. From my experience, that'll confirm if we're dealing with the same issue here.

Thanks for that detailed follow-up. It's actually reassuring to hear we had such similar situations, though that delayed engagement you mentioned has me thinking. Now that you mention it, I did notice some slight hesitation when shifting into Drive over the past couple weeks, but like you, I didn't think much of it at the time. I'll definitely get those error codes pulled tomorrow and have it checked out right away. Don't want to risk any additional damage, especially with those grinding noises. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it helps a lot knowing what to expect with the repair process. I'll probably start calling around to some independent BMW specialists tomorrow to compare quotes. Will update once I know more about what's actually going on with it. Thanks again for all the help!

Hi there! I have some experience working on cars and went through something very similar with my 2013 BMW X1. Also had issues with my previous BMW 3 Series. Those symptoms sound exactly like what I experienced, transmission warning, limp mode, and that awful grinding noise. In my case, it was indeed the torque converter that gave up. Had it fixed at an independent BMW specialist workshop about 8 months ago, cost me around 2120 Euro for the complete repair including labor. The shop had to remove and rebuild the transmission to replace the faulty converter. Took them about 4-5 days to complete everything, but the car has been running perfectly since then. Could you share more details about your X3? Like the exact model (28i, 35i?), mileage, and when these symptoms started? Also, are you getting any specific error codes? This would help me give you more specific advice based on my experience.
